Default Detonating problem....

I installed the turbo kit and all the extra stuff, but I am not running an intercooler at the moment. When I first put the kit on, the guy had like 8psi going so....of course I turned it down to about 3-5psi. I am slightly detonating at around 5k rpms I believe. It sounds like a ticking or a sound of rustling papers. It has been really hot outside lately.... this could highly contribute. I am only running 89 octane gas, I will fill it with 93 tomorrow. I still have the following mods lying around my house: Greddy Bluebox, MSD Ignition 6btm (new model specifically for turbocharged and supercharged cars) with boost retard, and HKS Turbo Timer. The following items are in the mail: B&M Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator, and Mitsubishi Starion Front Mount Intercooler. The FMIC endtanks will be modified so that the inlets are 2.25" in diameter rather than the very restricting 1.75" that Mitsubishi was so gracious to provide. When I step on the gas, my AFR gauge says that I am reading rich, so I'm guessing that the only contribution to the detonation would be the heat? Are there any differences between the D16Y7 and D16Y8 blocks that you guys know of?

Boost related mods:

D16Y7 Motor, 45k miles, 5-speed tranny
D16Y8 Intake manifold, Fuel Rail, and injectors
Greddy Turbo Kit
Vortech FMU
No intercooler
Blitz BOV
MSD 8.5mm Spark Plug Wires
NGK V-Power Spark Plugs (2 stages colder)
TurboXS Manual Boost Controller
Synapse Missing Link
A'pexi N-1 Exhaust (2.25")
No Catalytic Converter
Greddy Electronic Boost Gauge (Black)
Autometer Electronic Z Series Air/Fuel Ratio Gauge (Black)

WELL ..what upgrade in your fuel system you running ?
89 octane is light for any boosted application
if its stock pistons be careful ...it can blow up ez

The only fuel upgrade I have right now is the Vortech 8:1 FMU. I'm going to take it to the gas station tomorrow and fill it with 93 octane. I've only had the turbo in for a day or two so it isnt like I've been driving with it like this.

I'm putting the bluebox in next week, with the MSD 6btm, HKS turbo timer, and FMIC. The 8:1 FMU was just a temporary install because it was quick and easy and I wanted to see how the car ran.
