Crankshaft Lightening

Crankshaft Lightening
Im thinking about sending my crank to Castillo's to get lightened, balanced and oil gallery's drilled. Could this be a bad idea when Boosting a Honda? Im also hearing that for high RPM use it would be better to leave the counterweights alone to keep stability. Would this be better left for all-motor?

Re: Crankshaft Lightening (B20bTurbo)
well the weights on the crankshaft are to balance the motor. but....
by lightening a crank you are able to gain rpm quicker and loose rpm quicker.
on the down side you loose tq at the flywheel.
so lightening the crank on a na motor isnt a good idea: unless you want high HP and low TQ
but lightening the crank with a turbo aplication isnt a bad idea, since the turbo adds so much tq to a motor anyway. and the faster gain on the rpm's will help with turbo spool time.
a lightened crank does not allow you to turn higher rpm.

Interesting, anyone else with some other thoughts? I have also heard of people taking off weight at the end of the counterwieghts and placing them on the other side as to give the effect of round counterwieghts as in motorcycle's.

Re: Crankshaft Lightening (B20bTurbo)
a roller crank.... it adds massive TQ.
i dont know in your example ho it would directly affect the gain of rpm's.
in old school volkswagons, there are company's that make roller ball-berring cranks. they add so much TQ but its harder to gain rpm's because its more throwing mass.
i dont really know how that would work.... but i think it would be interesting.

leave the honda crank alone. it's a quality piece. have the entire rotating assembly weighted and balanced. pistons, rods, crank, harmonic balancer, flywheel. measure and polish the journals. done. you want to rev higher and gain power get a new valvetrain and fuel management system and a good tune. COP or DIS setup might aid in preventing misfires up top. it's not the crank you should look at. the crank is fine.

Dear "Importordomestic",
"Torque" is a measurement of the amout of power an engine puts out.
Lightning the rotational mass removes material the engine has to push. That translates to MORE torque to the flywheel, and then the wheels. Just like when you lighten a flywheel, or install lighter wheels. You have it back(***)wards.

Re: Crankshaft Lightening (mamaboy)
I know the stock crankshaft is a quality piece and has proved to hold massive power but that doesn't mean that it still can't be improved. I think these internals are one of the most important things in engines. It's amazing what lightening can do in some parts of the motor. I would also like to send my whole rotating assy to get balanced but no one I know does that. They all say for a 4 cylinder it's not necessary, which is starting to get on my nerves because I just can't beleive that.
