Default Cracked Dump Tube Question

I heard some rattling in the front of the car this morning, after class i go to look under the hood and see this guy

I got 2 questions

1) I didnt see any place on the tube where it looks like it had been hit, causing the tube to crack, so what else could have made it crack?

2) How soon do I need to have this fixed, I ask this because im in summer school right now away from home. All of my tools and knowledgable friends are back at home and I dont want to drive my car if its gonna mess it up. what kind of loss of performance am i going to see?

1) a **** poor welding job. plus the weight of the pipe.

2) take it off and get it welded for 10$.

Will exhaust or heat from the dump tube get back to the intake? If so, I would consider staying out of boost until repairs can be made. If not, I wouldn't think that it would have much effect on performance. ?????

Yes, hot air will escape into the engine bay. If you stay under the wastegate limit boost wise, it won't be dumping the hot air all over the place. But, there are people who run open gates everyday, yes they lose performance, but your car will live.

If you aren't planning on getting it fixed for a while I would see exactly where the exhaust gas is going to dump. You could possibly melt some things

I would love to see some more insight on this subject. My dumptube cracked 4 times in the course of a year. The first time I wasing using mild steel and a thiner gauge metal and a mig weld. It cracked again less then 2 months later. So I had it mig'd once again. About a month later it cracked again and I decided to switch metal to a stainless steel 304 metal that was twice as thick and went with a decent tig weld. About 6 months later, it cracks again. Confused I had it tig'd again and this time added a brace. This lasted for another 3 months before it cracked again. I ended up selling the car with no dumptube because I was tired of having it welded up and still had it continue to crack. The crack was in the same place everytime as well, right were the pipe was welded to the flange. The only thing that I could think of why it continued to keep cracking is because of the rapid heat expansion that takes place when hitting full boost. I got from 800 deg. crusing to 1450+ in less then 5 seconds and the material just could take it. Anymore insight would galdly be appriciated.

O BTW an open WG dump getting sucked into your engine can drastically increase the chance of deatonation.... then blown motor... So if its cracked it'll be ok untill you get it fixed but once it falls off... I wouldnt recoemend hitting boost untill you get it welded up. Besides, exh. recirculation kills power anyways...

ite thanks guys

I looked at it again and i can see where there has been exhaust gas shooting down onto the compressor housing. Im gonna try to get that done this weekend.

One more ?: Do you think that I should remove the rest of the pipe now, before it falls of and possibly damages something or gets so bent out of shape that I cant use it again. Or should I leave it on to keep whatever gas that does go thru it out under the car (dumptube exits into the air)??

Just take off the dumptube and then have it welded and dont hit boost till you get it re welded and re attached.

Is the end attached to anything?Mine broke until I attached it to my turbo brace.I used a piece of flat stock on an angle to let it move but not vibrate.Inline fours are hell on anything just hanging it the air.

yea im gonna take it off tomorrow then. Its gonna be hard not hittin boost on the boring *** drive home from school. Its not attatched to anything, just connected at the wastegate. Im gonna put something down there when I put it back on to support it at the bottom.

Unless you want to increase your chances of deatonation and lose HP, your really not fine with an open WG that dumps into the engine bay and gets sucked into the turbo. With 1600+ degrees of exhuast shooting out of the WG, it will melt any wires or even your bumper from the inside out if you run it like that for long periods of time. Ive seen it happen more then once.
