Default considering boosting an h22, thoughts?

Hello,

I don't frequent this part of h-t much as I am mostly in the accord forum. But anyways, I have a few simple questions that need answered before I embark into the world of forced induction.

First, of all, let me just say that I have a 1996 honda accord with an obd1 h22a mated to the f22 transmission. The clutch and flywheel are both stock, right now. I am running a p28 ecu with a custom rom for the h22. Ignition timing has been significantly advanced and fuel maps are a little on the wild side for some N/A fun. I also have a vafc hooked up currently as well. The motor was purchased from Hmotorsonline and has about 12,000 miles on it since the purchase (don't know how many total b/c i don't really believe the 35,000 mile average motor miles that they claim). The motor seems to be running strong with no problems that I know of yet.

My first question is basically regarding the h22 and how much boost it can handle. I don't really want to get crazy with the motor and build the internals or anything, but I would be willing to go as far as get a thicker head gasket and some arp head studs just to be safe. I've heard that the h22 can't handle much boost for long because of the 10.6:1 compression. So I was thinking that maybe a 5-6 psi setup for daily driving and an 8-9 psi setup for the track would probably work out. Is this an ok idea or can more boost be pushed on the stock block???

My second question regards the ecu. Would it be a wise idea to go back to the p13 ecu (and still stick with the vafc) when boosting, or would the p28 work out with less aggressive timing and more fuel (i can get chips custom made)???

Third, I plan on piecing the kit together myself. I've heard a lot of different people say a lot of different things about the turbo i should use for such a project and for 5-6 psi of boost. Some say a small turbo so that lag isn't an issue but others say that with only 5-6 psi, lag isn't much of an issue. I also know that 5-6 psi is different amount of air with different turbos, so again, what would be the best bet in this situation?

Any other suggestions and comments are welcome. There is a lot i left out, but i already feel this post is long enough. I am familiar with boosted cars as I have helped buddies with their own turbo projects. My main concern is just the h22a and how much boost it can really handle, and how well it needs to be tuned to handle it. Thanks a lot guys.

Try a search Anyway they are weak engines perhaps hondas weakest they will hold 300whp I hear, but if I were you I would keep it under or around 250whp. I have seen a lot of broken H22a's. Someonea goona flame me for that

The h22's are different because of their cylinder linings which require resleeving to run aftermarket pistons - and personally, I wouldn't push any engine on stock internals for any serious power (and reliability).

THe p28 should suit you fine. You have better options of modifying it with many of the freeware programs (uberdata, crome) - or even going the hondata route.
