Default Clutchmasters carnage...

I got a call Sat night that a friend needed a tow as he'd supposedly broken his axle. Turns out the axle was fine...he sheared the hub off his stage V disc. Anyone ever seen this done? There's <1K on the clutch with the first 500 miles being break-in for the motor...the rest on low boost (12-13psi).

Thoughts?

Well there is another CM down the drain.. There clutchs really suck anymore.

I have had 2-3 of them blow apart, either the springs come out or they do this.

CM

That's a little better looking than our stage 4. It broke almost completely in half. Hopefully our stage 5 holds up a little better or we will be switching to the twin disc tilton.

Yeah, he's exploring his options right now but is pretty clear that even if CM replaces it he's putting something else in. The top two choices at the moment are the Tilton cerametallic and the Exedy twin...leaning towards the tilton but it'll likely come down to availability as the car's a driver.

Damn that is bad.

I am using ClutchNet 6-puck sprung hub and it works great.

That clutch in the pic looks like it has a lot of wear on it, the puck is almost flush with the rivets.

Unsprung is harsh on your tranny and harsh on the clutch.

Maybe you can get the hub welded to the disc plate??? thats an idea.

I wouldn't blame clutchmasters...this can happen to any clutch.

My friends ACT clutch did the EXACT SAME THING this last summer.

I totally agree.

Just keep one very important things in mind.

I dont know for me clutchmaters is a 50/50 deal. One of my disks blew the springs out, then the replacement disk did find. So its a toss up...

my stage 3 clutch master held up just fine. After 20K miles I pulled off the tranny to inspect the clutch (I was excepecting it to be DONE) and it was still over 50% life left. The disk for the stage 3 though is stamped "daiken" same manufacturer that makes the disks for exedy.

I'm also not a big fan of the unsprung disks. way too harsh on the clutch/tranny and axles!

Heh...yeah I can't argue there, he isn't exactly easy on his car.

Here's what is replacing the clutch:

He went with the Exedy over the Tilton mostly for availability.

As for the DIS4...it was a wiring issue, actually didn't have anything to do with the coil-on-plug. When converting the car to an "emissions-friendly" state for inspection a couple things got mixed up!

Believe me, I'm in no way blaming CM for having a bad product or otherwise...was just trying to see if anyone had a similar issue and if so what CM did for them. If you ask quickda6, 99lspwr, or anyone else local to me they'll tell you that I use CM pretty much exclusively as I'm not a fan of the push-your-brake-to-the-floor feel of the ACT. One thing to note is that CM is replacing the defective unit for the cost of shipping so they get in my book. We won't be reinstalling it however as the owner is convinced that if he can break the stageV that badly on low boost then he doesn't want to risk putting big power to a new one...part of me doesn't blame him.

On a serious note though.....I dont see how that clutch could have broke that easily on ""low boost"" without doing something, ummmmmm, stupid....

That clutch is not meant for daily street driving anyway....

heheh...frankie-boy, I think you need to look at _his_ dyno, not yours

IMHO I don't see how street driving would have done this. Excessively slipping the clutch may contribute to burning the clutch/wearing the pads but I'd think would cause less stress or strain on the rivets. As you can see from the pics the rivet holes were ovaled before the rivets let go. It's really a moot point now, though as the clutch isn't going back in.

It's right around the same price as the cerametallic tilton. I was a little unsure as I haven't heard too much about the Exedy unit on hondas but I've spoken with several Supra owners that rave about them. What settled it is that we could get this next day but the best promise we could get was a week for the Tilton.

Ill be using a Spec Stage 3 6 puck. I've heard nothing but good things.

....Right now it's held up just fine while sitting in my basement

ALTHOUGH, I've heard of problems if you get the light-weight option. The pressure plates break i've heard.
