Building nitrous short block
hello ya'll
to the engine builders out there
i'm building my first short block from the bottom up for a nitrous setup:
- 81,5x87,2mm CP/Manley H-beam (~11,5cr)
- aiming for 200ish whp on motor
- will be running a 150-200+ progressive shot on top
so far so good on to the building part
asked the machinist to bore/hone and aim for 100µ PTW (,0040")
only got an averag of 93,5µ (,0037"), but hey i'll be running e85. it'll run cool enough.
main bearings started out with ACL regulars aiming for 45-50µ (,0018-,0020") for #1,2,4,5 and 50-55µ (,0020-,0022") for #3.
got a little extra room at average of 53µ (,0022") for #1,2,4,5 and 60µ (,0024") for #3.
once i got up to the rings everything is still fine, except for #2 and #4 oil ring gap. they're supposed to be at least ,015" (38µ), but they ended up at 32-35µ (,0126-,0138"). and you should'nt file them......
anyone some advice? why can't you file a oil ring?
problem is also, i'm on the other side of the fricking ocean and just calling CP for some new oil rings is not gonna make it happen anytime soon.
forgive me for the microns, but everything here is metric, so i have to calculate every figure back to inches.....
anyone?

Re: Building nitrous short block
I came across this with some total seal rings. There was like .010" gap in the oil rails and the guys we talked to recommended at least .015". They're just really flimsy so you can't file them by themselves, but if you have an old junk ring of about the same size, you can file them on top of that ring so that its supported. Its tricky, but its not rocket science.
