Default Borg Warner EFR turbos

Who is running them, and who plans to?

Surprisingly, I know only a few people who have bought them so it makes me curious as to who will be making the leap. I myself will be trying one or two out very soon.

Big money heavyweights from what I hear, wouldnt mind running one but I could buy a pair of 6765's with cash left over if the price is what I hear it is. Until anyone see's some legit unbiased testing I doubt they will be flying off the shelves fast.

I'am thinking of running one in my 87crxsi zc turbo, I like the system and how compact everything is.

I am curious to see what kinda power is made out of these. They seem to be rated pretty conservatively for the corresponding sizes...

well a pair is what youll need to have so you can make it threw one season.

these turbos look legit. built in bov for spool between shifts! they say they're going to be physically larger but lighter than the average turbo...

how much are they going for ?

Well I tuned a supra with the EFR8374 on E85, it only made a little over 600@30psi and boost would fall off twords redline. It was just plain out of compressor, I had a backpressure sensor in the manifold and it was definatly not the turbine that was choking up. Didn't really seem to spool that great. I dunno. My first impression are, I'm not really impressed.

A week later I made 730HP on a civic with a 6265 with slightly better spool. And 650 on another civic with a BW S366 on a super soft tune, So ehh.. I dunno if they are worth the money at this point. But I've only had 1 come through so we'll see.

I'd still buy a PTE over the EFR at this point.

Hi Chris, this is an old post, but im gonna have to disagree with your conclusions. We've already seen the 8374 go WELL OVER 700whp, on Jun's K20 T3 setup it made 712 at 30psi (outspooling his smaller gt35R) and on sierra sierra's world record shattering evo it made 750awhp at altitude. (havent seen any pte's break time attack records). There is no way you ran the turbo "out of compressor" at only 600hp. You had the incorrect boost actuator with too soft of a spring rate, so the wg was blowing open.

the turbos are nice, but I think it's a mistake that they put these nice new compressor wheels on the EFR lineup. they should release a second series that doesnt have all the integrated crap. a lot of us already have a kit and dont feel like jerry-rigging a way to block off the bov and wg ports

these turbos were engineered first for new installations. retrofitting older turbokits is still possible without jerry rigging (easy to run dual BOV, and even easier to use a wasgate blockoff plate)

We have a couple of these at the shop. Both are the internally gated single scroll EFR 6758. We plan to run one on a 2.0 liter Miata and the other on a MR2. Let me just say they are very nice workmanship and quality. We are very impressed and hope to have the Miata build up in the next couple weeks.

When you take into account a built in wastegate that will actually flow a good bit of air, a built in BOV and the electronic control solenoid that they come with their price is actually quite reasonable from a kit building stand point. You are saving a chunk of change not having to get a $200+ bov, a $250+ wastegate and a $100 boost solenoid. In the case of the twinscroll internally gated ones, now you are talking 2 $250+ wastegates that you don't have to buy or get dump tubes for!

The S366 is much like the 9179 and both are closer to the EFR9180. That is a much bigger turbo than the EFR8374.

how big are these internal WG flappers? Are they honestly comparable in size and ability to a good external setup?

its a 42mm internal wastegate "flapper" combined with aerodynamic porting it can out-flow many external wastegates. Here is an example on a test K20 engine of a tial 44mm external wg VS the EFR 42mm internal WG.


^^^as you can see, the EFR (Green line) is actually holding boost better in the higher rpm, where the 44mm started to creep a tiny bit (purple line).

In this photo you can see where it merges back into the turbine outlet. It is a very smooth path compared to other internal designs.

If they had a big enough single for my built vg30 I would, but I need bigger for that car.

I'm still debating about running one on my D16

the EFR 9180 would be killer on a VG30, they are outstanding engines (i am a nissan addict). however if you are into serious drag racing and needed more power/airflow, there are some new S400SX releases due in may from borgwarner using their forged-billet wheel and new turbine wheel designs

Well, I'm aiming for 700+ or however much I can get out of 93 and meth injection and then there's the race gas part. To give you an idea my compressor math falls dead center on a gt4294. I'll post up a pic of my gt4292 plot and the 9180 plot I did earlier.

The only real issue I was having was sizing the turbine side.

true, but I would rather just buy an efr minus the extra goodies so that i'm not paying for them twice, ya know? just seems like a poor decision, from a business standpoint, not to produce these turbos to as wide an audience as you can get

eh, i can't even run one because it would mean hacking up my manifold, which ain't happening. i'll never go back to t3 flanges now that i'm vband everything. and i feel like it'd just be a hassle having to sell parts and have someone fab up block off ports.

To each their own. As soon as my S366 is gone I will be ordering the 9180 and shooting for 700ish on a 2.5 liter.

im of the opinion these EFR turbos will run best in divided twinscroll turbine housings, i hope people listen. in T3 the 8374 seems to be the hottest size

We plan for the divided 1.05 with a shorty low mount manifold. I do wish they had a .91 divided external though.

will the 9180 use a 3 or 4 inch dp? i want it but dont want to have to change my setup again...and will the new sx400 coming out in billet will they use the ti turbine wheels like the efr and will they offer 67mm billet wheels?
