boosting on cracked ringlands =)
i finally got to taking apart a motor that was boosted for a year with cracked ring lands and here are the pictures...it ran a 13.1@105 at 2200 pounds at 12 psi on a dsm t25 on a d15b7
ringlands and rings are in pieces....
rods looks good but all the bearings are screwed....

you drove with them like that? if so, wasn't there a tremendous loss of power. i hope mine aren't like that already.

Actually, it ran faster after the ring lands cracked because the boost was turned up because it lost a little bit of power.
Compression numbers were #1-180 #2-100 #3-180 #4-180.

I cracked all 4 of my ringlands on the dyno, then drove home 250 miles with them cracked. Wasn't making too much power at that point and my compression test results were 20-20-25-80 or something like that. Not fun.

I went 12.7 on stock LS with cracked ringlands. All 4 were cracked and on 2 pistons the lower ringland even cracked too. This is all too common after the stock bottom ends see a little detonation. I eventually pulled that motor apart after I cracked a sleeve But I drove the car like that for over a year.....it went through oil like crazy.

Re: (93LSivic)
That's the correct attitude
I've racked up over 10K on broken ringlands, only really smokes at high RPM or under boost, but after a few thou smokes a tad at idle. You'd be surprised how little damage there is to the bore from this... the three I've seen torn down would either take a glaze break hone + stock size pistons or .25mm overhone/size. At the very least, the engine is still good for NA duty after an overhone.

^^Ditto that. Im currently running...or should I say will be running 5 psi later today if all goes well with tuning. On a d16y8- stock internals.
I have a feeling my ringlands or rings (?) could be gone. (the compression is skewed from the initial compression test taken before the first test run last week)(I would have a significant amount of exhaust smoke though wouldnt I?)
But not by much... so ive been told with 180k+ mileage, its not out of the ordinary.
I guess time will tell...

that's what my ringlands looked like on my first z6 turboed setup. Still ran a 14.2 @ 10psi with the compression numbers being 175-180-175-45

on a side note.........i just checked my compression and it's fine. i was afraid i had cracked one of the ringlands because the power just didn't feel there, but i guess i'm just getting used to it. i'm running real rich though.

No sir. One single, solitary broken land on one piston is enough to create a Spy Hunter smoke screen at low boost. That's half the fun of it!
