Default boost/ vac gauge problems

so my vac gauge read about 17 at idle but before it was reading around 22. and when im just at idle, and step on the throttle real quick, the neddle quickly goes up to around 4 psi. this just happened over night and cant figure out what the problem is. let me add that my car is not boosted yet and just have the gauge hooked up.

What brand of gauge are you using? It sounds like it may have crapped out on you. Does it read 0 with the motor off?
