Boost on a H22
I've been considering either a GSR or h22 swap for my 98 hatch. I want to eventually turbo it after building the engine completely ( whichever one i get ) . I have been to many shops lately and people are telling me no more than 6-8 psi on the h22. Then i heard that was a stock block. Same people said 20 psi on a gsr ( probably not stock ) . Since I was planning on completely building and bulletproofing my engine, should i go with a gsr or an h22?? How much psi whould i be able to run on a fully built h22? Thx in advance.
theres more aftermarket support on the gsr motor than the h22a..so "bullet proofing" and fully buidling an h22a will cost you more and most likely take you more time..theres more info on gsr builds than h22a as far as boost is concerned..i say go with the gsr..a fully built motor with the right turbo set up will allow you a wide range of HP from 200-700 or more..depending how what your applications and goals are...you should be more specific in your goals because this will escentially determine the route you take..also check out the forced induction forum here on the site..search "b18c1" or "b18" in the forced induction forum and you'll see many many threads..from builds to times to turbo set ups..good numbers..and tech information that will give you a good foundation on where to begin..i know Earl builds awesome blocks and heads for boost applications..
Well I'm hoping on running anywhere from 475-650 horsepower after turboing my car. I was probably going to go with Full Race for the turbo setup. I had originally wanted to go with a GSR and fully build that along with a golden eagle sleaving job. I was curious on the h22 because of the torque. I figured that it would be just as easy to build it. Thx for the info on that tho. I was at a shop a few weeks ago and i saw an ek9 with an itr motor in it that was bulletproofed, so the guy said, with a full turbo setup pushing 25 psi. The 25 psi on an itr seemed crazy to me. I asked him about the GSR because that was what i had planned on. Then he just told me to get an h22 and build it and bulletproof it and all and u can run more than 20 psi. Just a bit curious i guess.
im sure everyone here will agree..you shoulda done a small poll..but the gsr is favored among ANY set up..its a good platform for all motor OR boost..and if you want more torque..bore it to a 1.9 or hell even a 2.0 when you sleeve...besides....you wont see too much of a difference in torque once its all said and done..although there is no replacement for displacement...dont make your decision solely on the litre size of an engine...gsr has a better response after the swap..its a cleaner swap in general..and really you can just have more leeway with what you plan on doing...
i myself am going the GSR route....and im not being biased..cause i ocne wanted to so turbo h22a like yourself..after tons of reading thuogh..i realized that the gsr just gave me more options...
also...is this a street car?..cause anytrhing over 400 hp your gunna have traction issues..remember...HP is NOTHING without traction...

Yeah it will be a street car. What can i do to help my traction after getting around 400 horsepower? I thought that the weight of the h22 might help with traction a little in the front. Just a thought. Thanks for the info.
no the extra h22a weight doesnt make much of a difference..i believe someone calculated it to be aan extra 8 lbs from a gsr motor..what makes the h22a awkward to drive sometimes is confused with its weight..when actually..sometiems the swap itself is awkward..making the drivability seem as if it is front heavy..
as far as traction goes...i say its a good rule of thumb to upgrabe your suspension tires and brakes before beefing up your engine so much
.some strut and sway bars..good coilovers or shocks/springs of your choice..and reliable wheels and tires...some people drive around on slicks and drag radials..
i understand your previous want for 650 whp haha..
but you have to understand...a 400 hp corvette and a 400 hp civic are two very different worlds...
the difference among other things is weight..
i'v seen a 200whp crx walk all over a 300whp camaro...
your best bet right now is to not make any decisions..and just read facts..lern from other people's set ups and experiences....

Yeah im getting my car back next week from the body shop. Not gonna do a swap on it for a few months or so. Thanks for the info. What would you recommend to be a safe but fun horsepower to be running as a daily driver? BTW funny comment on the corvette. My dad has a 2001 c5 body with a z06 engine in it with some other goodies. Hes pumping out about 450-500 to the wheels, so i needa hop on it asap

h26 on boost? naw but Ill go either way. I myself got a boosted h22 and love it. But i got a prelude so there no other option. There's a lot of stuff out for the h enough to make it bullet proof but it cost a little more than for the B guys
. O and as for weight I believe the h weighs about 40 more pounds soooooooooooooo.

the H sits uneavenly in the engine bay..unless you get a REALLY good experienced job on it..which in turn will cost you an arm and a leg....
really though..go with a B..whats your budget?..
hit me up on AIM: DancingMop and we'll chat about it..cause i too am a newb to an extent and just started learning in september..but im sure theres tons i can share with you...
