Default Behold the carnage of a dropped valve!

Well originally I thought it was hydrolock but now i think its a dropped valve on cylinder 1.

I wasnt even on it, it just dropped pretty much out of the blue in the middle of my trip from maryland to new york. Luckily the turbo and turbine seem fine, although there was metal shavings in the housing teh fins on both sides of the turbine are perfect, spins freely and no shaft play so i think i lucked out there.

As for the engine, the head is toast for sure, cams and camcaps can be saved, same with the aftermarket valve springs. All the pistons are toast, block is still good, will need to be bored and sleeved. Rods and crank are still a mystery, engine turns over by hand pretty easily, im hoping the crank and rods are ok .

What do you engine builders think the condition of the crank and rods are? There was no metal in the oil when i drained it.

blockguard looks like it did its job

BEHOLD THE CARNAGE

what would cause one valve to just drop like that without over revving? the retainer broke?

your guess is as good as mine. I was cruising at 80mph, 5th gear, 4k rpms, part throttle, just cruising. Then it just lost power and died?

Retainer on both the broke valves where fine, the valve broke clean off right where it meets the stem

good god. that's crazy. I'm no pro engine builder, but my guess is that the damage was probably kept to the piston and above. One way to be sure, start tearing it apart.

Worst carnage pics I've seen in a while. Wow.

yup im hoping to salvage the crank and rods, damn those rods are hella expensive i hope they are ok.

I wont be able to inspect them til i get back home for summer. I just pulled it apart today as much as i could to see how bad it was. Yeah, its bad.

I guess the only good thing i can say is the turbo looks fine, although it had metal in it the fins on both sides are fine and the wheels spins freely with no shaft play.

sigh. Had to get the car towed home 120miles via AAA. I was in the middle of bumfuck PA when it **** on me. shitty shitty shitty day

dropping a valve is always nasty....but as long as you heard/felt/reacted to the problem quick enough you shouldnt have damaged anythign below the piston.

i said SHOULDNT have but theres always that slight chance that when something comes to a screeching hault that there could be more damage than what the eye can see...

all in all good luck man...hate to see b17s getting destroyed....such rare breed of honda motor...

oh and about what could be the problem...what was your timing set at: both ignition and cam? valves usually dont drop unless they come in contact with piston.

I broke a valve off at the stem, cruising at 80 just like you over the summer, except I was in a SOHC. Never could figure what caused it to fail.

cam timing is stock, ignition timing is base of 14degrees and idk what in boost, tuner did all that.

Car was running great all break, then just boom.

Here are my plans as of right now:
- New GSR cylinder head (will ANY GSR head work?)
- Use Same springs and retainers (dual, ti)
- CP pistons (9:1)
- Reuse crowler rods
- Reuse b17 crank
- Sleeve b17 block or get a b16 block and use a blockguard
- ITR cams

-REASSEMBLE

figure im looking at around $1k in parts

if your going to reuse the crank, i would get it balanced, i would also check the rods also, could have been damaged when the valve dropped

mine looked way worse
when my valve droped it went straight through the pistons and ruined the crank and rods. and all the sleeves cracked too

oh dan, such a pity

well at least you don't have an engine full of shitty oil/coolant sludge to clean out again

now i say you just scrap this engine and go with a big block chevy......

That would be piston #4, not #1

If you want to use your intake manifold, you'll want a B16 or TypeR head... (if I remember right, b17 used b16 head cast, Current GSR head is 94+).

If the crank is good, and you don't wish to sleeve... I think the combo of the b18 block(no need for vtec block and their oil squirters if you are going forged piston) and the b17 crank = nicer than normal oem r/s or displacement (or my mind could just be failing me). Then I'm unsure of rod length though... man... I can't seem to remember **** for details today.

Seeing **** like this makes me wish I never messed with my stock valvetrain. If you don't want to say the brand in this thread, please PM me.

not sure the brand, they were titanium tho. All the retainers were fine, no cracks at all. I actually pulled what was left of the valvestem out by the retainer.

the retainers are the round discs on the other end of the valvestem right? In that case all the retainers were still fine- the valve just clean snapped off(valvestem still straight) on the intake side and on the exhuast the valve was bent, then destroyed (bent valvestem)

as for teh rebuild- so you think it would be better to use the b17 crank and rods in a b18 instead of in a b16? Also if i go with a b16 i will need to use a civic si head (b16) and not a b18 - they arent backward compatible right.

I am using a 98 GSR tranny, will that mate up to a b16 or only to a b18?

thx fellas this **** sucks but im already planning the rebuild mwaha
