Default bearing clearances

Okay my 84mm motor just got finished but the builder that put the block together said that the bearing clearences are super loose. He told me that i have to run thicker oil. What kind of clearences do you engine buliders use, my clearences are .0027 for the mains and .0024 for my rods what do you think?

I think you may want to replace the bearings. I'm no expert, but that seems dangerously loose.

I have run .0025" on the mains and .0022-.0024" on the rods using 20-W50 oil. No sweat. That is how I set up all my race motors You'll be fine, I would not worry about it at all.

No oil burning issues whatsoever. Run 20-W50 all the time, even on break in. They should make the Mobil 1 in that weight! You will be fine. Street cars, race cars, whatever. Trust me on this.

Break it in for only 100 - 200 miles on the 30wt. Then switch to the 20-W50. If the rings haven't seated by then......

Vince, you have used those clearances on a Honda? How did that large clearance effect the oil pressure?

Change out your bearings, to get the clearance close to spec.
Why even chance it, you got a lot of money in a built motor and if it is your daily driver, follow the honda clearance specs. A little spent now will save you a LOT later if you leave things the way they are now you could risk damaging the motor. Take a look at this post of another member who has a similar concern on low oilpressure...

I'm curious about this, too. I run mine much tighter.

there is no point in running it that loose in a daily driver. and once you rack up some miles, spun bearings here i come

Honda says there service limit is .020.....

Im running mine super tight

But hey if GE says runnig thicker oil will be cool than Id go with it.

DOnt know how low your oil pressure would be though, already forget if this is a Vtec motor but high pressure will be a must for that
