Default backfire like a ****

last night i couldnt get my car to pass 5k. i had the distributor retarted all the way. this morning i put the distributor back to the stock location and changed the map sensor. well i could go into vtec know but it backfires alot it keeps on going but it keeps on back firing. should i advance the timing on the distributor more or regap my spark plugs? right know i have the spark plugs gaped at .44

thanks for replying. yes the car is boosted on a 97 gsr motor at 5 psi on a missing link and a vortec fmu. all the motor has done to it is a port and polish built up head.
