Default asking too much for a engine installation?

My local shop is asking $560 just to put the crankshaft and main caps on to a block. No adjustments like honing, etc. Also for him to assemble the engine, he'll charge $900!

This sounds very expensive to me, don't you think?

just to put on the crank and the main caps for $560 is a rip off and a half. My guess is they want you to do the whole thing so they overpriced you on the crank/main caps expecting you to let them do the whole thing for only 340$ more. call around some other reputable shops and see what other prices you can find, but 750-900 sounds about right to COMPLETELY assemble a motor when its completely torn down.

Thanks for the reply. See, there's where the problem lie. I'm in Detroit, where there aren't too many import shops.

dont forget the liabilty for installing the parts. i will assume that if they are putting in the crank and mains they are putting in the bearings, pistons and rods right?? so in other words they are building you a shortblock.if not then you are bringing them a car that someone else has 1/2 way done and you expect them to just torque down the mains and rods. i wouldnt touch the car if that was the case. imagine if there is any clearance issues. who will be liable?? we charge 600 to build a shortblock and 700 to assemble the longblock so i dont think 500 is unfair.

I'm piecing mine together on my own. Checking all clearances, gaps, etc.

Try doing it yourself and then asking if thats alot of money.

I dont think it is.

The shop at my house charges 300 to put together a complete motor. He will mic (not sure of spelling) every part to make sure it is to spec. The guys has been building race motors for over 20 some years. I am thinking this is a really good price now.
