Default argument about external wastegate

yesterday i went to the mechanic that my brother usually go to
he told me that external wastegate is just a waste of money because internal wastegate can do the same job
his 2.2ltr stroked WRX with GT30 running 26psi with internal wastegate .... he doesnt wanna use external cuz hes till havent found an external that works as good as his internal

so what is actually the advantage having an external apart from the looks and noise wise ?

External Wastegate are usually bigger and allow for more exhaust gases to be flown through them. Internal Gates are usually smaller ports and the flow is not as efficient. Internal gates are prone to boost spikes, while External are not. there might be other but that is what i can think of.

From what I have read, external WG are a whole hell of a lot better than internals...the only downside is that they take up space while an internal doesn't

internal gates work just fine for lower power setups... my friends mk3 supra has an internally gated 60-1 and makes 415whp @ 22 psi.. no boost spike or anything, we didnt even port the wg hole...

like they said earlier, people that make big power need external wastegates because the have bigger holes...

I cant remember the exact qoute but Corky Bell said something like "DO race cars use Internal waste gates?, no"

some something like that. Why make the turbo more complicated by adding an internal gate?

Yeah, I read that too: Proper turbo setups have external wastegates or something along those lines. Whatever, I think he perferrs external.
