Why not just run an open downpipe?

There will be no loss of low end torque on a turbo car with open exhaust...

here is an evil trick.

do open downpipe.... but leave the stock MUFFLER and exhaust tip on. dont connect any piping to it, just leave the stock muffler hanging there.... it might require a little shtuff to make sure it doesnt rattle around and stuff, but its a great way to make cops leave you alone if the entire exterior is stock, if you get pulled over, say that the car has just been getting louder over the last couple months, and you dont know why. sometimes, around here atleast, cops will leave you alone. a friend of mine did that with his S13 240sx coupe, and he hasnt got a single ticket

I've been running open downpipe for about a month and a half now. I've got a turndown on mine so it's not TOO loud. The only thing I don't like is not being able to really hear the motor and smelling like exhaust everywhere I go.

Sound pollution laws are based on dB put out by your car, not if it looks like it has a muffler on it.

I guess the cops in your area are lazy or something.

you must not be from CA. The CHP would be all over your friend. If your car's loud and is some type of modded sport compact car, automatic ticket. i used to hasseled a lot when i was all-motor with an a'pexi N1 cat-back. A guy i used to see a lot on the streets with an EG and b-series swap was running an open downpipe on his turbo setup. that ****** was lightening fast but loud as hell ... not to mention the stench. i think it was his weekend-only car, though.

my suggestion.. if street driven, get a straight through muffler - won't affect performance, i'd suggest a straight thought resonator too to improve the sound - it could sound bad on small displacement engine without resonators.

What if you just placed a 3" exhaust tip or resonator on the exit side of the turbo or downpipe?

yeah man, california is seriously really **** about "imports" with exhaust...

you could have your LS1 louder than a freight train, setting off alarms as you drive by cars... the cops rarely give you anything other than a glance...

and then you have a turbo integra, being pulled over for completely stock exhaust/cat... and have the CHP officer step out of his car with a mirror on a stick, and accuse you of gutting your cat.(surprisingly he never asked to pop the hood, or else i would've gotten the ever popular "modified intake") then when he finds, nothing, he fines you for 72 in a 65.........

and i don't understand how my girlfriend gets away with running straight 3" on her 98 tahoe, but i have friends that have been cited for their apex n1...

its gonna stink like ish without a cat but other then that, i dont really think you have anything to worry about with the po-po's on the big island.

edit: to answer your question, a muffler just creates more restriction.
