For a street car you NEED some form of radiator, the heat has to go someplace. For a strictly drag racing car you dont really need one. If you want to save some money you can go to a junk yard and use a heat exchanger from an a/c system.

chances are that a bag of ice will last you about 20-30 minutes if you're LUCKY.
so, like mentioned above, you NEED a heat exchanger of some sort.

As for your other questions...
A 3 Gal, would be better, since A/L is a closed loop system, the more water you have, the longer it will take to heat soak.
You can put it in the back/trunk, just run your lines INSIDE the car...-8 should be plenty...

why arent you looking into the PWR A/L's? they're NICE....
thats what I'm running.

many people use radiators or oil coolers for the disapater just because they're cheap and easy to find.

The bigger reservoir you can get, the better. I'd mount it out of the engine compartment if possible. If you're looking to use it on the street succesfully, you can run a switch to the water pump for it so you turn it on when you want to race.

20- 30 minutes for 1 bag of ice to last!!!!! are you crazy ??
a bag of ice will melt in about 5 runs on the street or track. i know, i had an air to water intercooler on my car.
i used a honda del sol dual core radiator for the heat exchanger, it works great. i also have a JABSCO pump hooked up to a 5 gallon cooler in my back seat to hold 4 bags of ice at the track or street use.
I said if you are lucky....

I dont have a pic of my 3 gallon cell, but its mounted against the firewall where the glovebox would be... However, my set up is track only, so I am not running a heat exchanger...

maybe this will help though...

here's my street car...

Notice the Chevy radiator cap where the stock resonator box was... That's a 1.5 gallon cell we made out of aluminum. Uses the factory bolt hols from the resonator box.

And the Oil/Water cooler in the grill, yo.

For the street probably the best option for the air/liquid intercooler is using a conventional half sized radiator as your heatexchanger. On the air/liquid project I am currently working on I am using the pwr 4x10 barrel core, with a pwr half sized civic radiator as the heat exchanger. With 10 a.n braided lines running from the barrel core, to the water pump, to the radiator/heat exchanger the entire system holds shy of 2 gallon capacity. I have no resevior since the radiator will act as the primary resevior and heat exhanger. With the water pump on full song, and the front mounted pusher fan going you'll get the maximum amount of ambient cooling as possible. On the street the heat exhanger size, as well as the capacity of the entire system to hold water will dictate how much heat transfer is going to occur. With my set-up I should be at ambient temperatures even during hard driving.

So has anybody been using an a/c heat exchanger for their water/air intercooler? If I ever go water/air intercooled I will probably try this. Its already there with the fan and everything!
