Default Air filter size (does it make a difference?)

i know this is a dumb question but, im looking into getting a new filter for my turbo setup. Im getting a K&N one but the one that im gettig is huge, the inlet is the size i need but the the length of the filter is twice as long as im used to seeing. My question is because the filter is long will that effect my performance, or does it not really matter.
