Default Adios 4th....

Update: Some new discoveries. This is the syncro ring above the 5th gear, below the top large mainshaft bearing. As you can see the three "stop blocks" are all broken down. This excessive play is what must have caused the slight 4 to 5th gear grind that I noticed every once in a while. I wonder if going from the ITR 4th gear to the LS fifth gear was just soo much of a change. I wonder if the jump from a 1.117(ITR 4th ratio) to a 0.714(LS fifth ratio) at certain RPMs would cause this to become under excessive stress and force that syncro ring to break off. Here is a pic showing a good one and bad one. Notice the width gaps on the "stop blocks".

While I was tuning my car on the dyno yesterday, I was about 5k rpms and all the sudden it sounded like I pushed in the clutch and nuetral reved it. I checked all my gauges, confirmed good and shut the car off. You could hear a clanking noise as the tires slowed to a stop. Pulled the tranny today to see some interesting news. This is...was an ITR 4th with maybe 500 miles on it. The passes that day were around 350 trq. I have never seen a gear shatter like this unless it was exposed to a shock like a lauch or burnout.

that sucks big time, ive never seen that happen before, especially with only 350 ft/lbs. i would expect it out of maybe a 500 ft/lbs car, but sorry to hear. i take it was a rebuilt tranny?

Nothing else is damaged. I have checked everything and it is perfect.

This was a brand new ITR tranny out of the crate 500 miles ago. I installed a LS 5th and my Quaife.

Good god... I guess it's back to the tinted-up beater until you can get that resolved. Best of luck to you.

you definitly overachieved on this one. that is just unbelievable. hopefully this isn't a sign of things to come and only was a weak tranny out the box.

what are people's opinions on breaking in tranny's before you put a whole lot of power down on them?

its not the power....
its the specs inside the tranny
i broke one like that before with only 120whp

i put a tranny togheter once and within a few days it shredded like that... but it did a better job at it... 4th, 3rd and 2nd were all gone

Hey charlie, I installed the 5th gear and lsd. I have built many trannies and have never had any issues. The tranny was brand new from Gettel acura when Bert-O worked there. No warranty since I opened it and installed the quaife and different 5th gear.

And this company that sells bushings....Ultra Rev. They say place the order by 3pm EST and the order ships that day. Two times I have ordered bushings over the span of a few days, both times it took 2-3 days before it even shipped. I ordered a clutch on H-T, paid for overnight shipping and now it looks like it will be here in 5 days even though I was promised 1 day. Same goes for my scatter shield, we are looking at 1 week and counting for a 2day air shipment. Just classic.

Anyways, I just ordered a new 5th/reverse Syncro set to get this tranny back up.
