I have a turbo GSR with VTEC Killer Cams and a GT4088R turbo, I ran 4 inch downpipe and piping underneath the car with a turn down just behind the front seats. It is entirely to loud, do the 4 inch mufflers really work and are there ones that work better than others??? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Mine works... I have a Magnaflow round muffler in the factory cat location, and a Magnaflow oval body muffler in the back. Sounded like my old 3" system.
we've built several setups in full 4''. with one presiliencer, and one muffler (all perforated core, no obstruction), they were totally quiet going down the road.
LOUD when you get on it.

Hey Thanks for all the replies! Looks like im going to have to get an exhaust made and run it out the back, I cant deal with it as it is right now. I love the way it cams but geez it gets old in about 2.5 minutes... hahahaha.

my 4" with magnaflow race muffler is LOUD, now its open downpipe i wear full out ear protection muffs when i sit in it to warm it up and when its on the dyno. Its just ridiculous but thats race cars.
i had an aluminum 4in exhuast (3in DP) full exhuast with no muffler it was super loud.. i decieded to install a muffler... i used the magnaflow 4in round and it made a HUGE difference and sounded much much better
Here's the specs of my 4" system -- 4" round Magnaflow 14162 up front, and a 4" oval Magnaflow 14153 in the back. It's actually very quiet running both mufflers.
Here's a pic:

This is the only video I have of the car running the exhaust:

on a related note....vibrant has an 18" resonator that is a 5" body. that would definitely be a better fit on the underside of a car as far as ground clearance goes, but does lenght dictate how much it quiets the exhaust or does diameter? that 14162 is only 6" long but is also 6" diameter.

My ground clearance is acceptable, due to how my piping bends upwards behind the oil pan to compensate for the muffler. The muffler is roughly the same height as the 4" downpipe underneath the oil pan.

also....are mufflers more effective the closer they are to the source? i think i can fit two under my car that are oval and then run a pipe to the rear of the car if so.
There is a key difference I must address properly. Based on what you "hear" inside the cabin versus what the cops hear outside your car, a muffler/resonator that is placed closer to the engine (underneath where you are seated) will make your interior noises louder with more drone, but it will be quieter outside on the outside. Having the resonator/muffler at the trunk, or even sticking out as far out as possible out of the rear bumper will quiet down cabin noise levels but make the car sound louder from the outside.

well im planning to do 2 14153's in 4" in similar locations that you have so im assuming that will be the best of both worlds. as far as losing some power im not too concerned with it at 4" diameter haha
I prefer the stock muffler + ecutout. It can be quieter if you want, louder, and in most cases more free flowing. The only problem is that conventional ecutouts suck. I went the custom route and never looked back.
The best part is I don't get cops pulling me over (big prob here), nor any ricers wanting to race me in their I/H/E Accord LX (Intake/hubcaps/exhaust Tip)...

I like E-cutouts as well, but for a nice street driven car, I'd like to have a good sounding exhaust as well as power on tap. The stock exhaust is so restrictive that for any big turbo Honda, you probably won't build boost, make 1-2 PSI so you have to drive around like a granny most of the time.
I had E-cuts before and it was such a hassle to open it up whenever I want to do a pull... Driving around on a daily basis, it's one of those situations which you see a nice empty gap ahead of you (passing someone, or seeing an opening in traffic) and you just want to give it a quick pull. You can't do that with an E-cut unless you leave the cutout open (which will make you go deaf pretty soon..haha).
I have concluded that either running a Varex electronic muffler or an APEXi active silencer was the way to go. Varex only goes up to 3.5" diameter, so it won't be a true 4" though. I only have the Varex on my Camry.
The APEXi active silencer however, has a 4.5" model and I currently have that on my Supra and Integra. The car sounds really quiet at low exhaust flow, but under boost, the silencer valve opens up and the car sounds mean. The Active silencer showed almost no power loss at anything under 650 WHP.

Tony,
I am thinking about installing an APEXi active silencer on my Accord.
Do you think the Apexi valve will somehow get sticky in the long run? (carbon build-up)
Will the valve have to be cleaned as opposed to the Varex muffler?
