3 gauges?? Or 4 guages?
I know the more merrier but, I'm goign turbo, so I'll need gauges. Money is tight and I am wondering if I can get by with 3 gauges or so.
I know I'll need a:
1. Boost gauge
2. Fuel Pressure
3. Oil Pressure
4. __________
Are those really all the gauges that I need? I've been suggested to get a EGT or water but.. I want to know if I can get by perfectly fine with 3 guages. I mean.. if getting 4 gauges will make a difference.. then okay.. but if it's more things to look at... then I will get 3.

I would at least have the following list,
boost
oil pressure
water temp
A/F meter a damn good one not autometer crap (Greddy quality at least)
fuel pressure
maybe
EGT maybe, I don't tune with EGT
oil temp
boost
oil pressure

EGT
i dont know about A/F cuz the cheap ones are not too accurate.
Get the MoTeC lambda meter

You know.. of EVERYBODY, I have ever asked, of EVERYBODY that had a opionion, OF EVERYBODY.... EVERYBODY has said something differnet.... How... stressful.
I think, I just might have to get someting and then just say.. " I got this so there" cuase.. I'm even more confused.
Let's try this.. I'm getting a FUel, for sure, a Oil pressure, for sure, Boost gauge, for sure.
do a really need anything else? Is it neccessary is what I'm tyring to find out. The place that I would get it tuned at has a really expensive 02 sensor to sniff it.
I'm just trying to narrow things down a bit.

I thought autometer was good and Greedy, er Greddy, was good but overpriced. I always thought autometer was high quality, everybody I know with any hp uses them. What's the deal?

Re: 3 gauges?? Or 4 guages? (PROFILEGSR)
So, I know this is going to go over well, but...I bought some cheap-*** gauges (Boost and Oil Pressure) off of J.C.Whitney and I hooked up the oil pressure on monday...it's starting to work better, but the pressure always reads WAY high, like 100psi when I'm on the throttle, which is crap. I'm not boosting and my engine is running like a top...tell me it's just the $15.00 gauge? haha I'm probably going to go with Autometer, but I'm thinkin I might be alright with the cheap one, as long as it's consistent (though reading high) and I know what it means to say Think it might be a clogged line? I'd like to think I just took one for the team and proved that you can't go that cheap
In reply to the post. I'm going with A/F (homemade, displaying voltage off of O2 sensor), Boost, Oil Pressure, and probably a homemade EGT gauge (I'll let you know how that one works out). I think the number of gauges you need depends on how much you boost. I'd say that if you're just going with 5psi, you don't really need anything except A/F and Boost (just make sure you've got a good oil feed/return)... but if more than a Fuel Pressure might be good, but you could just calculate the pressure and then infer where you're at by whether or not you're running rich, if you're using an FMU...

Re: 3 gauges?? Or 4 guages? (Cramerox)
get your boost and EGT first.. if your EGT is high, then you'll know that you're running lean, or that something is not quite right. Then i'd get an A/F, but not a discolight Autometer A/F gauge, something which is actually readable and "useful". Then you can go for all your other meters.. oil press fuel press etc..

Re: 3 gauges?? Or 4 guages? (nathan's boosted civic)
The more gauges the better I say. But do boost, egt (better than a/f unless you are going to change the oxygen sensor),fuel pressure, and oil pressure in that order. Other gauges are good too if you can afford them.
Look at it this way, the more data you can collect, the safer you can run boost without something going wrong. Think of each piece as lowering the risk a bit. Not to say something still can't go wrong, but you can catch something before it goes wrong.

Very good point, I will keep that in mind. The more, the betteer you can catch someting wrong.. But .. getting cheap autometer one's suck *** and are not accurate... Guess I'll have to go Defi. No matter ho wmuch it cost.. Gotta rob somebody you know?

Are the autometers really that bad? I'd hope that since they cost that much are that popular that they'd have something to them...maybe not...what's so crappy about them?

I thought full sweep electric Autometers were pretty accurate? I haven't installed mine yet but that was the impression I was under. Oh well I guess I'll find out in about a week or so when they go in.

Yeah, it's just that... Ahh.. I don't know anymore.. I might go Autometer still, I don't know.
