Default 3" vs 4" downpipe?

Yes yes i know, 4" sounds crazy... but is it really?

My application:
8.8:1 srp pistons
Eagle rods
topline bearings
Darton amazing sleeves

Tinker SST manifold (omg its gorgeous)
a turbo with more flow/powa than sc61, t3/to4e 57 trim spool (top secret turbo.. .sry)
Precision intercooler
tial 38mm
Greddy type R bov

I'll be running about 22psi to acheive a near or above 500whp mark. Street will be run at appx 13 psi making ~350whp. My advisor (who is currently crazy) is demanding i mail tinker my 3" dp and have it flared or converted all together to a 4" dp. keep in mind my power goals @ X psi.

Would i benifit from this abnormally large downpipe?

-Ryan

PS - i had to throw the ? into the subject for fun, i love when people do that

A 4" DP flows almost twice as much air as a 3". Itll help that much more
actually, i DOES flow twices as much.
3.14(pie)X 2" squared = 39. something...
3.14 X 1.5" squared = 19. something....

Turbos get power from the pressure difference across the turbo. Pressure in manifold that wants to vent to pressure on exit from exhaust housing. The higher the difference in ratio, the more the exhaust will want to flow through the turbo and the faster it will spool.

3" pipe area: 28.274 si
4" pipe area: 50.265 si

I'd go for it talk about blingin', 4" downpipe. Just make sure it's a GRADUAL increase in diameter, not just a straight jump to 4".

Back pressure is not an issue on turbo cars, as the turbo makes all the back pressure required between it self and the head. Basically, the less restricitve the better.

yeah but what will the rest of your exhaust look like?

4" all the way back would be nice, do a side dump just behind the passenger side door
