**performance pulleys**
well, since im replacing the belts and waterpump... ive been lookin into gettin a pulley for my LS motor. my cousin said that it might actually create some horsepower for my car. he has some on his prelude. any opinions or ideas on this subject? i was wondering if it would be worth it putting on an aftermarket pulley.. and if so, what are some reliable brands?
I have them on my EX, but I doubt they make any difference though. Some have actually told me that they might help a little, but just a little. Don't waste your money use it on something proven.

sorry to be the bearer of bad news but all reply's so far are incorrect... light aftermarket pullies do make a differance... i dont have any dyno charts to prove it on hand right now... but just think about it...
while they may not "make" more power themselves... they free up power resulting in more power going to the ground instead of power neede to spin the heavier stock pulley.
the same concept goes into light wheels... what is the point of getting light wheels? the less power is needed to spin light weight 15" wheels as it is to spin heavy chrome 18's... while it does not make power at all... it will make u go faster and on a dyno lighter wheels will show more power as more power is put to the ground...
why does takeing out your power steering and a/c result in more power? because the motor no longer needs to spin the weight of the power steering pump as well as the a/c...
so in essence... lighter pulley's do not "make" power... it would be better stated as them freeing up power
as for what pulley's i would reccomend... i would go with unorthodox racing pulleys

I got an AEM p/s pulley and an alt pulley for 60 bux.
I didn't want to put the alt pulley on, since my alternator was kinda weak to begin wtih, so I just threw the p/s one on. Can't say I felt much difference. It looks nice though. I sold the alt pulley for 40 bux.

I totally agree that they will free up some power, but I've heard alot of crappy stories about high wear because the pulleys either aren't made well or because they don't have a harmonic dampener/balancer...I wouldn't buy them for my car unless I was racing in some class where that would slide in as a mod, or if I had already tweaked my car out the *** for an NA setup...but, I'm sure you'll get maybe 1-5hp, depending.
the price spent on pulleys could be well spent elsewhere to make more horses. ive seen a lot of crank pulleys that dont have the correct timing marks on them so it's a bitch when youre trying to adjust youre timing
in any case I have a blue anodized AEM PS pulley, 30 shipped, not sure if I still have the blet though. even if the amount of power or lack thereof it may free up the PS pulley does give you better road feel.
There is a reason that the stock Honda pulley is damped. You take away that damping action and you'll have something like Mista Bones' bearings. Yeah, they do free up some horsepower....but for reliability...the money is better spent elsewhere. [Got a Helms Manual yet?
...and you'd still have money left over]
Mista...care to post up that pic one more time?

I can understand how 2-4 HP would matter when you are NA, but for FI?

The amount of horsepower gained by the pulleys are minimal compared to the money spent. But beyond, they damage parts. These pulleys, especially the crank, are not balanced. Any idea of what a unbalanced pulley will do? Not as bad as a unbalanced crank, but can do the same damage. Pulleys
Its hard to say if they make a worth while diffrence. I don't like having the alt pully because at idle all the lights dim in my car. And I always take off my PS belt for road feel when I go racing anyway. I will be putting my stock ones back in in the future.

i agree... it moeny that could be better spent elsewhere... but i never said pulley's are the best bang for the buck... i just answered the question at hand
i had the unorthodox racing pulleys on my car for about 60,000 miles of beating the **** out of it...and i never had a single problem. i finally cracked my ringlands after going turbo but that was obviously not related to the pulleys. freeing up hp by removing rotational mass is a concept easily proven by simple physics. and if you're going to buy a pulley, don't get some cheap crap pulleys and wonder why **** breaks.
i think the unorthodox racing stuff is very high-quality. i know all of the guys personally...they all run the pulleys on their own cars...if the products caused massive engine failure do you honestly think they would do this?

but when you're already turbo'ed does the free'ed up parasitic HP really matter? how much HP do you think would be gained from a FI application?

i think that the more power you make, the more they help. i reacall something liek a 30-40hp increaseon a 300zxtt...go to http://www.unorthodoxracing.com

know what I mean? I'm not so sure if I want to believe a manufacturers claims. I would rather see a 300ZX TT owner doing a before and after dyno of a pulley install, its more believable.
9second Honda's using stock pulleys!... that explains it all right there. Pulleys are waste of money.
And so are high priced COLD AIR INTAKES.

I had the Unorthadox crank pulley on my GSR back when I was N/A. I did not run any quicker at the track ...identical times before and after the pulley. About the only thing I noticed was slightly better engine response..........sold it.....it was a waste of $$$$
