Default tuning for mpg

hi , so i just got done reading the "tuning of mpg" thread in the FAQ section and i am interested in playing around with my map to acheive better mpg.

i have a 2.0L B with 11.5 compression on pump gas. I paid for 2 hours at the dyno where the tuner did as much as he could on the dynojet , as well as adjust cam gears, etc. Unfortunately, time ran out ( dyno was rented ). I like the tune, its powerful and smooth, but unlike alot of other people, i achieve about 21 mpg city/highway. Since i have a s300 , even the tuner encouraged me to play around with the settings ( leave WOT alone ).

so after reading the thread and FAQ, i realize every engine setup would like different numbers , timings , and AFRs . I would like to review with some of the tuners here before making any adjustments

- what columns like it at 14.7 AFR , and when should i start making it more rich ?
( from what ive read , it SEEMs everything before column 5 should be 14.7 , and everything after should be close to 13-13.5 )

- it seems timing also help with MPG .. how do i know how much to add or subtract ?

im not sure how to attach the actual bin file,

if anybody is willing, please provide an email and i can send the bin file ..

thanks for your time in advance. i really appreciate it

Go for a highway drive around 55-65 mph. Datalog which areas on the map you are in while cruising (not accelerating, just steady speed and throttle). Those areas are the only areas you will need to focus on. Be sure to blend the changes into nearby cells for a smooth transition.

thanks for your reply . so datalog when im cruising at 55-65mph and adjust AFR around that column and rpm to about 14.7 ?

after , blend the rest of the rpm before and after for a smooth transistion.

k i ll give that a shot .. should i play with the timing at all ?

You can run leaner than 14.7 in cruising

Cruising on the highway at 70 mph. My afr's are at 15.***. I get about 30 mpg with highway and city driving mix.

You can always add a little timing at cruising speeds, while not under a load.

14.7-15.5 is where you want to be. Leaner than that runs like poop. blend in the lower vacuum (closer to wot) columns .

generally ill tune 15-15.5 from 25" vacuum to about 17" vacuum at which point start smoothing bringing 12" to miod 14's 7" low 14's 3 " high 13's and from there your tune should be already done.

Depending what your timing maps look like you can add some down low vacuum but dont do it if your not experienced

agreed.

although i tuned my hatch a little leaner around 16-17 and get great mileage at cruising and still manage to run great. e85 does wonders.

thanks for the explanation turbo-ls ... if i target the AFRs from about 2700rpm to 3200rpm ... and blend the rest , will it be close or do i have to do individual rpms by itself ?

any specific gear u usually do this in ? tips to make it easier or do u datalog and go by that ?

i am inexperienced , but i would like to try and adjust timing if it helps . ( not wot , just part throttle ) .. any pointers ?

p.s. im not sure how to read the 20-25 vacuum area .. i cant pinpoint it ..

the rpm doesnt matter. you target the amoutn of vacuum your in to the given a/f ratio's i explained. you can tune up as high as you need to driv eon the highway and around town to keep yoru a/f spot on for better mpg. Ive spent countless hours making mine perfect on the money and i see 26-28 city and 32 highway, well when i keep my foot out of it but when boosting here and there i will see around 26mpg highway
