Default D17 non VTEC to VTEc

New to your forum and looking for a little help. I have a 2003 Civic LX that had timing belt break so I'm putting in a D172A2 vtec engine. I read up on the swap before buying the engine and found a forum where a guy used an apexi controller instead of doing the ecu swap. Being that this is a DD with only CAI to help with mpg I went with a cheap VTEC controller off ebay. I found info on wiring and such for 6th gen but not on 7th.

Is it possible to use a cheap controller on to complete the SWAP? I found an rpm signal (one by battery) and have a wire to VTEC. Trying to get controller figured out before I get the rest of the engine installed.
