Chipping usdm and jdm
JDM ECUs use mostly surface mount components while the USDM uses thru-hole components. Other than that check out PGM-FI.org for the DIYs and component differences.
OK so I'm guessing that you have no soldering experience. You may want to focus on learning how to solder and the different types of components and solder that are used before you start modifying ECUs. try searching the internet (Google) on soldering types and tips. There are probably already many pages explaining the difference.
Thats what I've been doing lol I also Have some circuit bords here from old computer that dont work any more i'm gonna practice on first along with some scrap wire to learn to solder before i modify ecu's. I am a complete noob with it comes to that and tuning but as far as difference between jdm and usdm i was haveing a hard time finding it and i skimed threw pgmfi.org and did see anything but I will read it all at somepoint I was just hoping to find a quick answer. I really want to learn as much as possible
Here it is in a nut shell.

Best & cheapest place to get your electronics hardware (EPROM chips, resistors, capacitors...etc..etc..) is Digikey.

Ok i understand the difference now between surface mount and thru hole. How or were can I learn to chips these without spening a ton of money. I've seen some videos online but practice make perfect. So how can i get some good practice and does anyone know a good site to learn more about soldering like when to use liquid flux or if it's ever need or how to clean a solder joint. For practice to I shell out the money for ecu or should i try on some old electronic equipment ?
I used an old motherboard out of a trashed computer and a garbage ECU to practice on. Watching your heat and making sure you don't burn the board or components is key. I always use flux when I am adding components. There was a good ECU Chipping DIY on here, I'm not sure where it went though.
