Default OT: Learn Drifting from BSR Instructors?

Found this on the Hyper-Fest home page.

News Flash!
Want some REAL drift training? US Drift and Summit Point Raceway gives you the chance with the US Drift School. The schools will take place at Summit Point Raceway during the Hyper Fest event the weekend of July 5-6.
The schools will be taught by the BSR driving instructors on the famous Jefferson Circuit at Summit Point. For only $100 you will get valuable classroom time discussing topics such as car set up and drift techniques. From the class you will head over to the skid pad where you will work on controlling your slides. After completing the skid pad you will head over to the Jefferson Circuit where you will put your training to the test.

This is not a course for just beginners. The US Drift Schools will be valuable to the experienced driver looking for better car control to the beginner that is looking for training.

I'm not sure how to react to this. BSR and drifting stunnas just don't seem to go together. At least the BSR instructors will improve the stunnas' driving. And they'll probably go out in the Caprices and blow everyone away. If I wasn't racing I'd love to watch...and wouldn't mind some time on the skid pad myself.

While I'm not keen on seeing a bunch of ricers drift, I will say that the BSR school is definitely a good one to learn how to control oversteer. The BSR training is offered to many of my co-workers, who have all thoroughly enjoyed it and found it to be quite useful (especially since a few have actually had to use their evasive maneuvers training abroad). Now if only the training was offered to contractors... hmmm...

Drifting is a term used loosely I believe, I would believe they intend to teach proper car control in oversteer and loose situations, in conjunction with that they will probably explain the dynamics and setups that can cause a car to drift, especially controlled

using the "drifting" culture to sell it is a good idea, to bad those kids don't know what they are in for, it would probably sell out in several days

I've got mixed feelings about it as well. Drifting is growing though. A US magazine dedicated entirely to drifting recently hit the shelves.

I guess I'm in favor of formal events. People who know what they're doing will be less of a danger to everyone, and be less likely to practice on the streets. Unfortunately, the growth will also increase the numbers of kids practicing through their neighborhood as well...

I'm glad you brought this up Morgan. It seems that the term for "drifting" varies quite a bit. I always associated drifting with a controlled oversteer, but for most people, it seems that it means an time you are able to kick the rear end out at all. So I don't think NASA is marketing this very well from a safety standpoint.

Granted I am not too up on my vernacular on the subject and what differentiates "this drifting" from "that drifting" but I have definitely heard of sanctioned drifting events on the West Coast and have heard that they may become more integrated in amateur race weekends in the future. The corollary to the argument that folks will practice on the street is about as thin as hpde/auto-xers will try taking their learned skills to the streets as well. This activity, regardless of how you value it, should be an addition to motorsport, not a detraction. It seems awfully haughty to label all or any involved as "stunnas" and I wonder how much you'll hold to that argument if this becomes more incorporated into race weekends and high performance driving schools in the future.

The thing that scares me about this new drifting thing is that you'll probably have participants practicing on the streets, backroads, etc. The last thing we need is people practicing their drift technique on public roadways!
