OT: AEM s2000 drift car...

Not sure how many you saw this already; Stephan Papadakis introduced his new turbo-charged S2000 drift car at SEMA. Not much a fan on drifting, but i'm happy to see some other cars out there instead of the defacto 240sx/AE86.
You can see some more SEMA pics over at http://www.vtec.net/

RS*R Takes 1st Place in the Need for Speed Underground Launch Party!
Irwindale, CA., October 25, 2004 – In a night to remember, RS*R's S2000, driven by Alex Pfeiffer clinched 1st place in the EA Games sponsored Need for Speed Underground Launch Party , held at the Irwindale Speedway. This event coupled music and drifting into one spectacular stage. The top 16 from the Formula D series held this year were invited for a special, winner take all invitational.
The competition was stiff and RS*R had a tough battle ahead. Round 1 was RS*R vs. Drift Association's AE86, driven by Taka Aono. With the first run being too close to call, Alex and Taka go at it one more time. It was close, but RS*R took the win and moved on.
Round 1 Video
Round 2 featured RS*R vs. the Pontiac GTO, driven by Rhys Millen. Again, the first round was too close to call, and the drivers turned the cars around to give it another go. The RS*R S2000 performed flawlessly, beating the GTO and moving on to the semi finals.
Round 2 Video
The semi finals pitted RS*R against the Jasper Performance Supra. The Supra had an ill timed spinout, and all of a sudden, RS*R was in the finals.
Round 3 Video
In a match up that everyone wanted to see, RS*R is up against Ken Gushi, representing Gushi Auto. The first pass was amazing, and RS*R took the advantage. Gushi crashed in the second pass and was disqualified due to not being able to continue. After all the smoke cleared, RS*R was atop the podium with the 1st place trophy!
Finals Video
"The event was really fun, and I look forward to doing it again. I'm always eager to race at Irwindale due to the high speed drifting that is capable in that track," says Alex Pfeiffer.
"The car was performing very well, and it's come to the level where we feel very confident in its competition capabilities," states Ben Chong, Director of Business Development for RS*R.
RS*R would like to thank all of its sponsors: Honda, Lyndex Nikken, Yokohama, Air Splat, Enkei Wheels, C-West, Kaaz, Takata, Defi, Sparco, TMR, Dynamic Autosports and Hiro's Auto.

I have respect for things that aren't easy to do, and drifting isn't really easy in a "competition" state. Same can be said about other subjective "competitions" where they are scored by style. Hence, I don't call it racing.

get used to it, drifting is like import drag 10 years ago, it will blow up. all the big names are into it now including factory sponsor drift cars. GM, Ford..... i'm sure honda will want part of this market too.

The only thing that will blow up are the numbers of fan boys, who will have to jump from one trend to the next. Its all fine with me, as long as one of those losers doesnt "get sideways" into the back/side/front of my car on the street.
Its darwin's way of weeding out the defects I suppose.

See where my beef comes with that, is the descision on the "winner" can be easily bias, by a judge.
The use of judges always presents flaws. But these arent figures skaters doing a tripple axle, or a gymnast doing an Iron Cross.
But these are cars. Judging them by stlye, is something straight out of a cartoon...literally.
The drift shows were definantly cool. But turning it from a display of skill, to a competition with leagues, classes, and ranks is rather out sorts.

LOL.
Drifting is not a sport, its more of a sideshow and just an overhyped burnout contest. Drifting is only a sport when its involved in Rallying.
Well back on topic, I think that car looks like ****. The decals just look generic. can someone post pics of the engine??

i read an article in honda tuning about the rsr s2k and it handled too good to drift so they had to unbalance it by putting a fuel cell in the trunk and putting a lower quality (rx-7) steering rack in order to make it sloppy enough to drift. i dig how drifting can make a car that doesnt handle so well make it around a corner faster, but i think its gay to take a car that is built to handle and making it sloppy. either way i like seeing honda win, so whatever.

It's common practice for those with turbo's to mount their radiator/intercooler that way (in racing situations). The opening in the front bumper helps to divert air so that those 2 items get enough air to do their job.

I read the same acticle and I agree. I think it's kinda silly to take well balanced car built for handling and make less stable just so you can slide it sideways around a corner. Either way I hope Honda wins

I have mixed feelings about the functionallity of mounting the intercooler that way. I think the car would benefit greatly if they put speed holes in the hood.
I love how they fabbed the endtanks though, definitely a nice and simple way to make endtanks

I haven't read the article, but I talked to Alex Pfeifer (rs-r s2k driver) and he said the electro controlled steering wheel was a little to unpredictable for drifting (it would keep trying to straigten the car out). So that's why they used a convetional pump steering rack. Mazda just happened to have one that fits.
