Which is faster Grip or Drift? (OT)
Sorry.
I've been thinking about this for a long time and I decided to ask here since everyone here is knowledgable.
Which is faster? Assuming like I had a skyline r34 or somethign which can handle both styles of driving, grip or dfit.
Sure drifting LOOKS fast, but is it really faster? Like the R32 in Initial D doesn't drift and it's okey.

Uh drifting is for looks and is definitely the slow way around the track.
No...proven by Gansan. Using proper lines are way faster. Not only faster laps but also longer durability of tires.
On the other hand. Power slide on some cars CAN be use on some curves to improve time.

drifting is not faster. I'm pretty sure that drifting competitions in Japan are about style points as well as times. I have a couple of videos and it sure seems to be that way.
From a pure racing point of view, it eats up your tires and by spinning the tires, you're actually not putting the power down.
Don't know how this relates to dirt rally though.

What about on a surface besides cement?
ie: dirt, snow, gravel, etc. I would imagine drifing is faster, hence the reason all the rally cars do it.
Otherwise: Grip.

What the **** is a drift course setup? Rally? Even there they are drifting because they can't get any traction.

It's not your standard course. In short, it basically driving circles around cones.
Grip would be faster on a skidpad than drift.
Grip is faster. Drifting is only good to redirect your car (ie rally).
But it's definitely not faster than grip.
Drifting is rally-style driving on pavement.

Well, standing in Japan and watching it happen, but I suppose you wouldn't consider that evidence unless I could show you something.
These cone setups that they make are quite unconventional. If you treated each cone as if you were running on a skidpad, you might run into other cones. It's set up kind of tight were you are forced to slide, drift or run into other cones.
Oh by the way, I'm not suggesting that drift is always faster than grip.

Exactly, drifts are used to redirect the car.

Drifting is done to impress the audience. The point is to try to do the entire course in one continuous drift.
But what about those mountain pass things in Japan?
There are so many hairpins, don't cars especially fwd like ours have a hard time rotating the body around without slowing like right down?

In a mountain pass I'd say drift is more fun (IMHO), but grip is faster.
