I tried doing a control drift at the skidpad at Summit Point and had a hell of a time getting it. Now, with a longer wheelbase, it's easier to do, but the only thing I've succeeded in is snap-steer...

I'm not a fan of it either but it is an amateur auto sport and so as long as it's done on the track, i got no problem with it. Actually come to think of it, it's some of the people that are into it that turn me off towards drifting more than the sport itself. Otherwise it is fun to watch real pros do it...
We had a drift group at the last track day I attended, and while there were some very skilled and responsible drivers there, I've got to say that the MAJORITY didn't deserve to be out on the track; kicking up rocks and dirt all over the track, disregarding the cornerworkers, flags, and general saftey rules. It got to the point where the workers stopped the session, and two guys KEPT lapping AFTER getting black flagged 3 or 4 times. Aweful. I definatly will not attend, as a driver, another shared event, ever.

This type of behavior reflects more on the organizers and classroom instructors. They need to come down on people who ignore saftey procedures very harshly, and remove them from the event if neccessary.

I hear you 100%, and I kept WAITING for someone to kick those a-holes off the track, but to no avail. They just kept going round and round and round. It was abhorable behavior on account of the drivers; utter disregard. PS- I'm in no way trying to intimate that enthusiasts, in general, that enjoy "drifting" are of the same cloth as those a-holes above. Specific individuals, and an isolated incident.

Well if such events continue to draw such individuals (wrapped up in JDM drifting machines in Sport Compact car) then the events become unsafe for thsoe who actually want to have a good time and try something different.
It sucks really. And if the event organizers allow this to happen and i were there - i'd pack up and leave.

My sentiments exactly.

a friend of mine actually started a drift club (www.dgtrials.com) that holds events once a month at the local dragstrips parking lot. its all legal and what not and it helps keep people from drifting on the street. also gives people who are serious about it a place to practice. i dont have a driftable car, but i think its a positive thing.

drifting is ultimately the last step... they really should learn the road racing basics first. basic car control principles, learn the lines. car control takes seat time to acquire.
I think it's great. Any form of organized, sanctioned motorsport should be encouraged. If we were at the mercy of individual idiots or bad organizational decisions, road racing would not have survived in the US.

I have never really understood the negative attitude towards (private, legal) drifting on this board. My guess is that it stems from the fact that it is "popular" with the import crowd, and most of the people here put themself above such infidels.
Maybe opening your mind could benifit everyone. Not only does it develop superior car control skills (and is FUN), but the fact that it is popular could bring in sponsorship money. sponsorship money which could also spill over to your road racing.
legitimate, organized drifting =

That's just it... there really hasn't been such a thing until VERY recently. Personally, if I owned the right car, I'd want to try it.
Unfortunately, it will likely to inspire on-road practicing by the non-track crowd.

Yeah the venue is full for Saturday practice. If you didn't sign up in time, there's always next time. Saturday is practice with the instructors, but the Sunday is closed to the the general public, skilled drivers allowed only for the competition scheduled. By the way, everyone is welcome at drift days and that has always been practiced. Respect the instructors/event organizers and you'll receive the same. If you haven't driven at the any of the club4ag events, come out with your car (FR preferred
).
A REMINDER: I read on the board that some people from H-T (not only H-T, I know there was more people) ran out and stole flags from the sponsors. Please don't do that, it not only reflects on you, but reflects on everyone. Imagine the pro drivers putting on a show for you and them watching you steal from their sponsors. That is uncool.
To all those with positive attitudes, keep it up.

well, on the east coast, thats what dgta is trying to create. a safe place for people who are into drift to go and rock out for a few hours. so far there just in north jersey. but they are looking to expand for sure.
