Drag racing vs. drifting
i really love importdragracing and have been going to events since battle way back when with my cousins when i was a little ****, before FWD took over and when it was still import racing. I remember when tony shagday ran the first ten second all motor time slip 10.98. THAT WAS AWSOME, and countless other records being broken. I LOVE IT. I also attended the D1 grandprix in Irwindale. THAT WAS ENTERTAINMENT, and i will definitly go watch again. But to tell you the truth how manny americans compare to the Japanese at drifting? I know one thing in sport compact drag racing though is that we make way faster cars on the dragstrip with there cars than they do. I guess Sendai is all the have.
it definitly wont compare to the first D1 Grand Prix, that was bad ***. To tell you the truth i had more fun at that event than at any drag racing event that just my honest opinion. Doesnt mean im going to sell out and go rice out a silvia and try to get it sidwayz. Its just fun to watch.
Gary, I see it like this...
If I'm a kid and into imports, but I dont know **** about cars, drag racing can be a real downer.
Its the top of the world for you when you car is fast, but it takes time money and knowledge to go fast.
So some kid buys a civ, pays to swap the motor, maybe even turbo. He thinks that thing is greased lightning, and so do his friends.
Next thing you know they are at the track and getting smoked by guys who know their **** and have faster cars with less stuff done.
That leaves a bad taste in these kids mouths for the sport of drag racing, especially at the track.
Personally I would love to have fun drifting around, but there is no replacement drag racing for me, its been with me since I was a child and will stay till I'm old.

Its like this. As long as stupid street is in production, drifting will be cool. And you may ask why is that? Go open a stupid stree. What will you see covered in there? Something RWD and from japan. These kids now a days can be easily influenced and they see it and go "whoa the japanese do it so we have to do it too, cause its the cool thing to do".
The new "JDM" trend is taking off so everyone is doing the cool thing to do and following the sheep. Like evil93evo said, the people dont have the know how/ budget to build a drag car so they do the next coolest thing, Buy a mid 80's early 90's beater (ae86,s13,s14,etc) and gun it around a corner so the *** end swings out and it looks cool to there friends. I mean i have seen people that used to praise fwd. drag racing and go to street race there fwd.'s and as soon as they got a wind of this JDM ****, they all sold there FWD's and got a RWD and got it "sideways"
Thats all i have to say..

Its too bad really that NHRA and others are pushing the import drag scene further and further from the the reach of the people it really needs.
Come on with the new rules for Hot Rod allowing aftermarket trans and such...
Come on guys how are you going to get new people in these classes when you compete with these guys.
Its like the very fast get faster and the only slightly fast guys must get slower by building a car to compete in one of the street classes.
How can it be that a guy like me who has slaved away forever in there garage to make there own car fast and finally run 9's only to be totally killed by team megabucks every time.
NHRA needs to change the classes to something more like PRO Tube, PRO Unibody, then the real "hot rod" cars like FWD, wheelie bars, a fiberglass only on doors trunk and front ends, but not mega buck machines that only run meth and need a ten person staff to be able to stage the damn car. Basically a heads up class for the Sponsor challenged types that are the heart of drag racing.
I'm rambling its late

Why hate so much on the magazine? Who cares what they ***** out to the public. Thats there job to see what's hot and what's not. If u worked for any mag, you would be doing the same thing. People get offended so much by eveyone whoring out the whole JDM scene like it was a secret club. Why even get into the scene if there are going to be some many haters. At one point in everyone's life time, there has been a bandwagon jumped on. Why are all these people here on Honda-Tech? If no one jumped into the whole "Honda scene," then this site wouldnt exist and prolly this whole import scene wouldnt be what it is.
Trends are what they are..trends. As long as the media covers it, there's going to be followers.
Drifting and drag racing are two serparate catagories. Drifting is more of the entertainmant, while drag racing to me is more comparible to a sport. Since drifitng just hit the states, im assuming its gonna be the next big thing.

who cares if its the next "big thing." the people who are really into dragging will keep doing that. and i guess the other coolass bandwagoneers will drift to their hearts content. i dont have anything against drifting ive actually been doing it for years every winter.
as far as competition goes ill stick with the real thing rather that the big thing.

good point.. Why hate on a magazine soo much? i think everyone there (minus a couple) are idiots... I have heard of one of those idiots tell a car show winner we cant put your car in the magazine, its not euro lowrider. Thats why.. thats reason enough. If your a magazine you need to keep up a certian level of profesionalism, not be total dicks.. But thats a different story..
The honda trend started 10-15+ years ago.. Thats a long going trend. The drifting thing is being done as of late cause tower records started carying option 2 mags and everyone got a hold of em. I dont wanna hate on it, i just hate people who love one thing one moment and then when majority swings another way, they drop everything and follow it. Thats all. And then they go and hate on people who drag race, when they themselves was drag raccing a week ago and now they are driving fast up a mountain.

i beg to differ. drag takes $$$ and the skills needed is relatively easy to acquire (once you can cut good lights, launch well, and shift fast, that's about it. drifting can be done in low buck cars (or built expensively), but the skills needed is *much* higher than drag and has a much steeper learning curve. to go faster in drag, the only way to do so is to dump more $.
d1gp usa was the perfect example of you don't need the best hardware to win, the car that won was the corolla and it was the lowest hp car and the oldest chassis.
drag racer attendence and spectator attendence has slowed down a bit due to a lot of different reasons. but IMO import drag sport peaked already. there looks to be a 2nd wave of street legal drag cars doing 10's and 9's. however, drifting is catching on in a big way, world wide.

Frank, I feel that Drifting will be Mainly a Spectator Sport in the US soil.
and I hope it will... due to only 1 reason (is that I wouldnt want noobies drifting all over the roads when they arent experienced)
The reason I feel it will be a spectator sport is like what you said.. it takes alot of skill and practice to be GOOD. Most Drifting enthusiasts won't be able to get to the level that is seen in D1.
As far as Import Drag Racing... it hasnt peaked that its on its way down. I think its up there at the peak.. but hasnt reached its highest point. The time that every PRO race is within 2 tenths of a second of each other and that the Qualifying field is super super close is the time when Import DRAG racing is at its peak.. and at that time.. it wont go down.. it will just level off... and thats when new regional circuits will form to accomodate the PRO-AMateur level for racers all over the nation.
my 2 cents

The mid to low 8 second FWD drag cars are pretty hard to relate to street cars anymore. Most of the drop in et has been from the chassis/drivetrain development. Power has always been fairly easy to get. The surge of the 10 second and 9 second street-able cars is great - as lot of people can relate to the cars.
Road racing, autox, and drifting are all going to get more popular. Majority of drag racer (even the most hardcore) I've talked to express strong interest in coming out to run, for the most part they just don't know how to get into it. I hosted a small drift practice day last Friday and we had tons of fun... I'm going to organize more events.
our group:
my buddy Al doing his thing...
me and Georgia... she's learning to track and drifting... her S13 powered by SR20DET (very fun car!)
In some ways I agree with you, perhaps it hasn't peaked yet. Import Drag is even more mainstream more than ever... so much that many domestic shops/parts markers are finally all giving in. But in some ways it is saturated too...

True about the saturated market. While our company deals mostly with DRAG Racing performance and thats where we started from ... we are getting into the Road Race scene as well.
In 2004, Exospeed.com will be a contingency sponsor for ECHC.
While our name isnt big yet in that scene, we have done quite a few motors and heads for hardcore Road Racers out in the East Coast.
I hope to get another car soon to prep for the WCHC, but that wont be until 2005. I wanna practice for a year or so before going out there. We have so many cars we already started we have to finish first.
