who is using individual coils?
Do you gain that much of a better spark from it? and the big question do you really need it? i have been lookin at it and a friend gave me the idea about a cbr coil that would work great for it, guys got any input?

it gives you the comfort of removing the dist.. for more room but you will never create as much spark as the dist... and coil do, people that are using it in the pro ranks are using a motec cdi box, gardella used dist.... no problem i used dist... no problem, kenny uses direct coils plus motec cdi... when the great linginfelter built his cavalier he used direct ign.. could make enough power so he went to dist... and coil and was able to do much more boost and make more power. all you have to do is compare ignitions (MSD) and you will see the difference in # and call they have a great tech line.

we have installed our coil on plug kit on several cars. the advantage is you can have a much more controled timing event with the coil on plug where each one is driven from a seperate channel by the ems. you have the ability to trim the ign for each cylinder. we have seen over 600hp on the setup we use with out any issues, thats at a 0.035 plug gap with denso ik24 plugs. the ign also saw over 40psi when the wg vac line came off on the dyno.. the dyno shut down at 5000 rpms b/c we overloade the torque capacity... around 400ft lbs of tq... no evidence of missfire at all.
the more boost you run and the higher rpms you run the more advantages you will see from going to a coil on plug setup. with the setup we run you get 540,000 volts at the spark plugs, the aem cdi provides 540v to the primary side of the coils, the coils have a 100:1 turns ratio.

You CAN create more spark with individual coils than a distributor....unless you use a magneto! It's all about the right combination
