Turning a Honda Crankshaft?
I've been searching and found quite a bit of information about the ability to turn a Honda crankshaft, but everyone seems to have a different opinion.
Some people are saying that the nitride coating on the crankshafts does not go very deep, thus, by turning the crank, it effectively removes this coating leaving the crankshaft useless.
Yet others have a different opinion, I emailed ERL today and they replied back with this:
Clevite responded with this:
My rod journals have just been micro polished
My main journals have been turned 0.010.
Opinions?

You can have the journals turned on the Honda crankshafts but I wouldn’t go deeper than .010 because then you get into the hardness of the crankshaft and then you would need to send it off to have it heat treated and would cost you a lot of money. Going .010 under would not hurt you at all though if you had to.
Honda cranks are nitrided from the factory, providing a surface hardened area. Folks in the aftermarket have been re-grinding Honda cranks for years with no apparant problems, hence everyone sells oversized bearings for them.
My main journals have been turned 0.010.
Opinions?

starting with a good, virgin crank is usually a phone call away. i have never had a crank turned. i always just throw them away and start fresh.

Re: Turning a Honda Crankshaft?
So would you guys suggest finding another crankshaft and just have it checked for balance and get it micro polished?
Is this my safest bet?
