Default Tire compounds

So I am in the market for some tires, and I am finding the same tire in different compounds. This will be my first investment into slicks. My car will be making in the range of 800+ whp, and I hope to be in the mid 9's. I live in Idaho, and will be traveling to the nearby tracks, if that makes any difference. My Question is, what compound is a good all around compound? I know there are recommendations on some sites, and descriptions, but what is working for you guys?

I know what brands are good, but is there a better compound than another?

Both have their fans, I can say from my experience, that John @ M&H goes above and beyond with customer service.

I hadn't actually thought of going manufacturer direct, and speaking with someone. Wondering if there were any far and above the rest.

Well that is kind of the point of the thread. To help us that dont know what some of the abbreviations mean. $1000 is a lot of money to toss at a set of tires, just to have them not be what I want. if there are far better ones for the same price, why not?
