Default Timing

I know this is a generalized question and every car is different, but what do you guys typically see for timing after you finish tuning your cars? I'm talking midrange and the top of the power band on turbo cars making power in the 600-800whp range. Please state what fuel you are on also.

Any of you guys add timing down low to help spool your big turbos?

this isnt a big block v8.. that seems way to high by about 10 degrees, unless your base timing is off.

C16 17 degrees 30 psi....advancing ignition doesnt help spool on turbo cars. i advance my ignition under 3000rpms to make up for the lack of instant air so it'll help get the car moving. when it comes to spool up time think of anti lag, we retard our ignition to make boost. if your looking for boost to come in earlier you gonna have to re think your setup (turbo manifold, compressor housing, a.r sizes, IC pipe size and routing, etc)

Yeah I definately know I need to get a smaller turbo. Just trying to get a better understanding of the tuning side of things. Keep the comments coming guys. It's interesting to see what people are running out there.

every motor is different....even if you build two identical motors they will not have the exact same tune.
this thread is useless

Did you even read any of it? It is to get a general idea of where most people are. I'm not looking to take x users timing and throw it at my car and call it a day. Go take your meds they seem to be wearing off...

yea but the difference would be very negligible.

^agreed^... I'm curious what's the lowest you guys have taken them... I have gone down to 15* but I don't think it was needed as we weren't picking up much power lb for lb after 35ish psi. At this point the timing mark was at the bottom of the strap.

Ricky, if you don't mind me asking what management was that on. I have tuned on import before and I was not that high on timing, I wasn't having det issues but the car just wouldn't make more power with more timing (could be setup related on my part) Don't know it just seems like a lot of timing to me but I have heard that different management systems (read Motec and AEM) will yield different timing values on the same engine. Just curious.

You can have timing issues on hondata cars or any cars with stock distributors. At high rpms the timing you see and timing you are actually getting may be off. If you tune a cat with a distributor and then retune with a management with better triggers and your end timing results will probably be different.

yeah i agree. just to know you are in the ballpark range can be priceless for peace of mind. im surprised and happy people are chiming in on this, as some people consider stuff like this "classified."

for what its worth i was at 20 degrees @18 psi making 500hp on vp c12. im using a bone stock ignition with ngk 8's gapped @.018

Exactly why I made this post, if you do alot of searching on timing you don't come up with much. I'm very happy with how many people have chimed in on this.

I would like to see how people are "tuning" in there timing. Far as I can tell some are running step timing, some people get their ve tuned then tune the timing, some do this for each time they raise the boost, etc... Would be nice to hear how people are going about this and their reasoning behind it.
