Default Solid NHRA safety rules

Just wondering if we could have a sticky with solid information on safety requirements. While building my first actual track car I have run into so much conflicting information it's driving me crazy. Along with that, it seems the rules are written around rwd cars and a lot of stuff doesn't pertain to us or varies. Another helpful thing might be to post things that most people get through tech, as we all know some inspectors will let some things by while others won't.

I don't mind keeping up with it as people provide info if this post was stickied, or if someone else wanted to do it.

Become a member of the NHRA and read the rule book for yourself.

a rule book is about 10 bucks and all the general stuff hardly gets updated so just get the 2013 book and youll be set for years to come.

two things i see most often:
-rubber valve stems wont pass tech if the track follows the rules, must use steel valve stems
-fpr must not be in the pathway of the flywheel in the case of the flywheel coming off

I understand getting a rule book, and its on my list of things to order online. I'm willing to bet it would still get used a lot if there was a thread.

Metal valve stems are also on my list of things to order. Lol

Well, I support more than just import drag racing. It's the grassroots of where things are today. If it wasn't for the NHRA you'd have nothing like we have today. Most tracks wouldn't exist.

You can tell who was involved with Import racing when the NHRA dropped the sport compact classes. lol

Pay your dues, get your license and go fast.

Wow, such insight.

I recently read the latest online NHRA rulebook I could find, because they DON'T really have anything sport compact. It's general rules, and class rules, that many times revert back to general rules, so it IS hard to figure out what's what.

Here are the notes I took for my street civic that should be low 10's next year, and I've already gone over 135mph:

Competition License: All 9.99 and quicker cars. No mph listed.

Scatter Shield: 11.49 and quicker.

Chute: 150mph+ (see reg. 4.8)

Cage: 10.99mph+ or 135

Full Bodied Cars unaltered 10.00 and 10.99 roll bar permitted. (?? just the notes I wrote)

Window Net: SFI 27.1 on full bodied cars that are required to have cage.

Mstr Cutoff: 9.99, 135mph, or relocated in trunk

Belts: SFI 16.1 11.49 and quicker

Neck Collar: SFI 3.3. 9.99 or 135mph

All 10.00-13.99 non oem supercharged/turbo- SFI 3.2A/1 Jacket Mandatory.

7.50-9.99 or 135mph, mandatory jacket/pants SFI 3.2A/5 and gloves SFI 3.3/1

These are just the notes I took. There may be a newer rulebook/revisions. If you really read through the whole thing, there are tons of silly things like metal valve stems, the NHRA can steal your car and tear it down, etc.... but I get what you're looking for, and I think it could be an informative thread as well.

That was my point. I was going through the 2012 book cause its online right now. It's pretty confusing.

They talk a little about rollbars in the rollbar section, then add more about rollbars in the rollcage section. Or what about driveshaft loops? We don't have driveshafts in the traditional sense, does that mean it doesn't apply, are the shock forks enough to say we have a loop? Sfi bell housings? We can't bolt on a new housing and I don't see cars with scatter shields very often, does that not apply to us? That's the stuff I'd like to clear up

I was always a street racer till I got my first launch on slicks at the track. It hooked so solid I have no desire to street race again, but all of this stuff is new to me. I'm used to just building a fast car and to hell with everything else

You can always find out who the local NHRA cage inspector is in your area and talk to them about any questions you might have

You can always call the track you are going to and ask them about specific rules they may or not enforce as heavily

One of the reasons you pay professional fabricators so much for their quality work is because it's part of their job to stay current on these rules.

As a DIYer, you often need to do a lot more work on your own

I love NHRA Pro drag racing, go every year.....BUT, I don't support the constant issues with rules and expensive certs and licenses that expire with the quickness when 99.5% of us will never race at an NHRA sanctioned event.

this horse has been beaten, and rotted down to a black spot in the grass for sure LOL.

Are you planning on running a NHRA event ? If you are then like xenocron said speak to a NHRA tech , If not then most of there rules won't apply as other sanctions have there own rules.

http://www.bandimere.com/free/race_faq.php

Bandimeres quick FAQ for racers. Covers all the basics.

Yes you do need a scattersheild if you are 11.49 or faster. Drive loop honda took care of so don't worry, but that is a rwd aimed rule.

following the nhra rules has nothing to do with racing at an nhra event. you are right 99% of us wont race at an nhra event, but 99% of us DO race an nhra sanctioned tracks. those tracks have to enforce the nhra rules to stay in business. also the rules are not there for the nhra they are there to protect us

if you want the complete rules just get a rule book its the most simple way
