Default Questions about using a Spool

I tried searching found nothing.

How safe is it to run a spool?
Like what do I need to look for when using it.
How does it react.
I know turning becomes more difficult.
I am just wondering cause I might get one.
Just looking to see who uses them and what there thoughts are on them.
Thanks

Cody

i almost did it but didn't want to fight turning it or fight the steering wheel / car if an axle broke...that **** can really catch you with your pants down and put you into another car or the wall. Its cheaper....but maybe not haha.

i cant say first hand, but a good friend of mine ran one in his integra for a couple months. it was not his only DD, but once he put this in, he certainly didnt want to be driving it around town much. popped axles out of the trans pulling into parking lots and what not. HOWEVER, that car hooked up WAY better at the strip than on the lsd. night and day difference in that respect

I run one in my drag car, works very well for what I use it for. As far as driving around on one its not fun. Like hatrickstu said popping axles out from turning lock to lock and fighting the car while turning sucks. My spool works for what I use it for but I dont drive the car much track only.

I used a spool all last season and really liked it personally, but turning the car at a stop with 6psi in the slicks make you wonder if the stearing column is going to give! And I sold mine and went with a quaife this season because im only running the 5.9's and to cheap at the moment to upgrade. I did break an axle in the water box and it shot me right at the wall! If I was going down the track my car would of been done.

I hate it! It makes turning a bitch and I broke an axles at 115mph and barely missed the wall. Not to mention that pushing it is a nightmare unless you are going straight.

Might just save a little more and get a LSD.
Anyone got one for a LS Hydro?

That would be me, and it sucked very bad to drive around town a u-turn was no longer a simple task, and became a three-point turn. You have to take everything wide..you do get used to it to a certain extent but IMO its not worth the headache that it causes. Sometimes I'd have to make sharp turns pulling into the burnout box and one of my axles would pop out..idk if that was due to it being an older spool or what, but it certainly sucked when i found out about the axle popping out right after i launched. Luckily I was holding on tight and hit the clutch really quick because my car was headed straight for the guard rail. I'm a student, and on finals day I was pulling into a parking space and heard a clunk (the splines on the passenger side of the spool had stripped out)..since it was a spool i was still able to drive my car home, but like i said before, its too much of a hassle. If your car is strictly for drag purposes then I say go for it, but if you plan on putting any type of street duty to it, you'll probably hate it.

driving with a spool isn't the greatest thing in the world for turning, but it is the most effective way of putting power to the ground for straight-line acceleration.

I don't have a problem driving around my integra on a welded diff (essentially performs like a spool) around town, but it can be a pain to turn at times. If I had the extra cash to get a nice LSD I would for sure have it. Do I want to spend almost $1k on an LSD?? certainly not at the moment.

Just dont use a spool for any type of daily driving. If you plan on driving around on the streets or anything like that dont use a spool, go get a lsd. Like I said it works for its intended use.

Do your self a favor if you decide to run a spool. Get the best axles money can buy, and a set of go jacks. They are a necessity in the pits.

my look at it is im going to get the DSS pro axels so in theory they wont break wiht 16x10s si somthing in the trans will have to go so the car will just stop pulling all together.
