Cage Question
2 Piece Main hoop, is it legal? Welded at the top
OR does it all have to be one piece.
We are designing a cage and trying to make it as safe and legal as possible..
Any tips or pointers would be great

Re: Cage Question (rota92)
I think butt-welding the tubes is out of the question, but there is information in the handbook about slipping a larger piece over the joint and welding both ends. Contact your local NHRA tech official and ask him / her.

Re: Cage Question (T4 Neon)
I did this for my front down bars form the main hoop to the floor. To get them as tight s I wanted I couldn't get them in as one piece. I took another piece of moly tube, ripped it down one side enough where I could squeeze it to a smaller diameter. Slipped each end into the normal size bar and welded the middle up. Pulled the ends free and finish welding it.
I sued this piece as an internal coupling along with a weld that connected all the pieces. I also put 4 rosette welds. But I am only shooting for mid 10's. I have not had it looked at by a tech yet. But I have no fear of the joint.

you must have at least 6 inches inside of each of the pieces you are joining. then you need a 3/8 or so hole 6 inches away from the joint to show that the inner sleeve goes that far. and they want the holes every 90 deg at the six inches then weld the bar to the sleeve in those spots.
i welded 3 holes and left the 4th unwelded to prove the sleeve went that far and the car was certified like that.
