Alcohol types
I just read the new NHRA rulings and noticed they allow Ethanol and Methanol. What's the difference for tuning? I know Methanol is toxic and everything, but I have no idea how to use Ethanol. Yeah this is a noob/stroke question, but I've done a search and there doesn't seem to be any info anywhere on the net about these two. If you could please help me out or point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks....
edit: Forgot the ? in the title.
PS I'm also curious about using freon as a coolant how does that work out? Is it spraying it onto the intercooler? I thought releasing freon into the atmosphere was illegal.

Ill leave this one for the more experienced tuners on this forum, but Ill ell you its not easy to get it running on a daily car if thats what your considering it for.-pdang
tractionbartuner and tony1 can help you out with this one.

Actually this is for a track only car. I wouldn't consider running ethanol on a street car. I would go broke just driving to work at $4 a gallon. Expensive stuff.
Methanol is only about $1/gal if you buy a 55 gallon drum. I think i'm gonna convert my m3 to run on meth since it's so much cheaper than gas!
I hope your joking hehe cause itd be cool to see, doesnt cali gas have either meth or eth added ?

I'd like to convert to meth for my street car too. we pay 120.00 for a 55 gallon drum of alcohol for the race car. for c16 its 400.00 for 55 gallons or 7.60 per gallon.
from what I read, Eth is similar to gas...it's right in between meth and gas.
as for freon...bad idea.
if you're gonna run meth, you don't need an intercooler anyways

yeah, but dont you use twice as much or more alcohol as gas to make the same power or more, which is more like 240$ for 110 gallons vs 400 for 55gallons of c-16. Now dirt track racers and dragracers around here dont flush there tanks for an entire season. just keep starting it every other day or so, your fuel cell is just as airtight as your fuel jug, right? From what i gather people blow the babysitting methanol alittle out of proportion. Any truth to the rumors that have filled my head?

So from what everyone is saying Ethanol is close to gasoline, but what kind of A/F ratio wil I need? I did a search already. I was thinking about Methanol, but I have no where to store something like that. I also don't want to deal with something that damn toxic. I'm sure some of you can understand that. I would asume I don't need an intercooler with the Ethanol either, but would it be better if I used one?
gasoline which is the fuel of choice for motorists, contains in excess of 20,000 BTUs per pound it requires far more pounds (gallons) of methanol to develop the same horsepower; especially if it is a highly modified engine designed to produce gobs of horsepower. In order to produce this kind of power very large fuel lines (3/8” diameter or better) are used to transport the methanol from the fuel tank to the fuel system injectors.
The reason for methanol over gasoline in these racing applications is that the critical temperatures (piston crown, intake and exhaust valves and seats, and head) are much lower per developed horsepower when operated using methanol as the fuel.
As far as ethanol it makes less hp then would meth. but the problem with meth its ordorless and its damn unstable. its corrosive as hell to ur head and when its lit it clear. Ever seen a IRL race where someone falialing their hands and ur asking yourself what the hell hes doing. The redneck is on fire. I also think that Meth is very deadly itll destory you liver and kidneys if too much is inhaled. But i know the Meth A/f is about 6:1. not sure about eth... sorry couldnt help more
