well it depends how etched in they are. For most water spots though windex should be plenty. However some waterspots don't remove easily if you have hard water and they actually need to be polished the same way you would polish paint to remove swirls.http://www.autogeek.net/dia-glasswork-restorer.html If windex doesn't work this product should do the trick but I always like to try the least aggressive method first.

i use optimum poli-seal and a green cyclo pad on my porter cable polisher if they are topical deposits that won't come off with a quality spray cleaner. i use varying degrees and combos of pads and optimum polish and my porter cable if the spots are more serious.

glass is pretty damn hard so you won't damage it by using a quality polish, pad and the average dual action polisher. just don't heat the window up too much in any particular spot.

depending on the frequency of the washes, i use optimum spray wax on every exterior surface including the windows. it helps prevent spots actually etching in the first place.

I use a razorblade and some windex. I also use newspaper as its cheaper than using paper towels.

I've had hard water spots and overspray on my window and i've gently used a razor blade to scrape it off. Just do it in one direction at an angle.
