I wanted to show a driveway DIY pinstripe removal and trying my best to bring back my 95 GSR to top notch.
Disclaimer: I am not a body repair person and I am sure there are other ways to do this. Do your own research and figure out what is best for you. Try this at you own risk (although I spent several hours reading highly sophisticated detailing forums and this method popped up frequently).
Plastic scraper
Goof-off (bug & tar)
Shop rags
Water spray bottle
Maguire's clay bar kit
Maguire's cleaner wax
Try to lift the edge with a fingernail and pull gently. I was able to get sections close to a foot long this way.
If the vinyl is really stuck, the goof-off can soften the vinyl and you can scrape it off (slowly) with the plastic scraper.
One the vinyl is removed, spray the tar reviver on the residual glue and let it sit 20 seconds and start gently scraping with the plastic scraper, not much pressure is needed. Work in two feet long strips and wipe off immediately with rags before the glue "sets" again. After each spot, I sprayed water on any trim that had residual mist and body panel to remove goo gone so it was not sitting on paint prolonged.
I then claybared the entire car to clean residual glue and a large amount of tree sap and road tar. This also prepared the surface for the wax.
One light coat of cleaner wax with a 15 minute flash haze. I buff out with old cotton t shirts. I found those to be easy on the paint in the absence of microfiber towels.
I do have very very light "ghost" striping due to age. but the wax really helped minimize the imperfection. In the shade, it is not visible.
Overall the paint isnt perfect, but, no where near bad enough to necessitates respray.
