AWD Conversion ForumThis forum is to help with the recent advent of new AWD conversions. Got a question? Ask it here. Got an answer? Drop the knowledge here
Hey guys it seems like it's been a long time since I've been on, I've been slammed with projects like crazy and my drag car has pretty much been on the sidelines since I just had so many other things to work on. Anyways, once the new years started I decided what the hell, I'm going AWD. I've been wanting to go down that road for like 4 years and wanted to wait for parts to develop before jumping in and with seeing some of these B-Series 7 second quarter mile cars out there, it was time to dive in.
This isn't going to be a lighting speed update daily kind of project mainly because the way I am planning on putting this together is extremely expensive. I'm planning on putting up list of parts I am purchasing on this first post so if anyone looks at it they can use it for reference. I will also post up the places I am buying parts from and rating them based on how fast they are on getting me parts and overall customer service LOL. This way, if I have any bad experiences I can just give you all a warning. Now I already pulled the Kaizenspeed Rear Trailing Arms and sold them along with my rear skinnies so the car is on the lift bare right now.
LIST OF PARTS:
AWD Trailing Arm & Diff Mount Package: I went with Hubcityperformance on this one, I've heard a lot of good things about this company and it seems a lot of people are using this product. I ordered mine with the Spherical Bushing option and Anodized Black. I am currently still waiting on this purchase to come in but I can tell you that when I had questions I emailed HCP and got responses same day. So far the customer service has been great. 10/10 on customer service https://hubcityperformance.com/store...mount-package/
Rear Toe and Camber Kit: Since I sold my KS Rear Trailing Arm kit I had no rear camber kit or toe so I decided to go with PCI Spherical Rear Camber Kit and Spherical Toe Kit. I ordered this project from JHPUSA and have not been impressed with the speed of getting the product. On their website they say in stock, ships 1-7 business days but it's been a couple weeks and I haven't heard a thing, when I called they told me they had to wait to get it shipped from PCI to them and then they would ship it to me LOL. When your site says in stock I would assume you have them and will get them shipped. 5/10 on customer service. https://jhpusa.com/collections/rear-...-89-01-integra https://jhpusa.com/collections/toe-k...-90-01-integra
Rear Brakes: I went with SpeedFactory Racing AWD/FWD Lightweight Rear Staging Brakes Kit. HCP says you can use stock integra rotors but I didn't want that, this kit is lighter and the brake rotor also has 11 teeth/window to allow use of a Hall effect sensor to rear rear wheel speed which I already have so it was worth it. https://hubcityperformance.com/store...ng-brakes-kit/
Rear Lower Shock Mount Brackets: Because I run Strange Engineering double adjustable shocks I needed to get a SpeedFactory's Billet Honda AWD Mount brackets so I would be able to reposition my shocks so the adjustment ***** would not get hit by the rear axles. As usual Speedfactory was very fast and kept me updated on shipping, I had these within 5 days. 10/10 https://www.speedfactoryracing.net/p...shock-brackets
Rear Differential: This was a freaking challenge, I wanted the wagon rear diff but it's damn near impossible to get and when you find it people out there people are wanting like 4 grand for the diff, driveshaft and viscous coupler. Now I wasn't planning on using the drive shaft, axles and of course the viscous coupler would most likely need a rebuilt anyway. My solution was to order the S1 Built CRV/ELEMENT Diff with Clutch Locking Plates. More about that later. DP Racing was really easy to work with, 10/10 https://www.dpraceparts.com/products...locking-plates
AWD LSD: Because I couldn't find a damn wagon diff and I purchased the CRV/ELEMENT diff with clutch locking plates I would to at least make an attempt to get a super strong LSD. The good news is GearX makes an LSD with the 25 spline Wagon Axle Fitment mean I can run the bigger and better Wagon Axles over the CRV ones. I ordered this from tallpineracing and have to say their customer service was excellent. I called them up and from there on out this guy was texting my pictures and information, answering all my questions so they get a 10/10 https://www.tallpinesracing.com/prod...ear-torsen-lsd
Pinion and Ring Gear Set: Again because I wanted something to withstand the abuse I also ordered the GearX Pinion and Ring Gear Set, I also requested the polishing and cryo treatment to make these as strong as possible. I am hoping that with the LSD, Ring and Pinion, locking plates I will have made the CRV diff as strong as the wagon, that is my hopes. https://www.tallpinesracing.com/coll...inal-drive-set
Hell yes! Been wondering where you've been hiding. Are you hoping to see some track time in 2022 with the AWD setup?
My realistic plan is to have the rear end portion done, once I finish that I was planning on selling my Dog Box Trans and shifter set. Once I do that I wanted to get the AWD motor mounts, transmission and have DSS built me a custom drive shaft and hopefully get everything running but I won't be racing it with a stock trans. So the transmission and T Case build will probably be next year and I still have to figure out the viscous coupler situation. Finding a wagon Viscous is really hard and would most likely need a rebuild anyway, so I was thinking of buying a new Freelander Viscous but I also heard S1 Built has their own Viscous they built so we will see.
Have you seen the Gear-X viscous coupler that goes inside the CRV diff? Not heard how they perform (other than Gear-X's claim that it is 900 hp proven), but it's neat/smart that it fits in the CRV diff where the clutch pack originally went, and it allows you to run a one-piece driveshaft.

Super interesting! They only have reference to this on their facebook.
glad you decided to pull the trigger on this before i did lol. last time i looked, seemed like parts availability was scarce. but more fab shops were coming out with more awd kits. i think i totaled around 10 grand in parts early last year. to fully convert to awd, with suspension and all. at that point i kinda decide to just hold off to see if someone comes out with oem replacement parts. also looks like your coolant lines are gona have to rerouted again.

I have seen a video online with someone installing one but nothing on reviews, it's not on their website either so I am not really sure.

you got thread everywhere lol
Yeah, parts are scarce if you want any wagon stuff but now parts are available to beef up the CRV Rear and DSS makes Axles/DriveShafts. Other people are making billet carrier bearing setups, you can buy new freelander viscous couplers if you don't want to buy used and trans wise you can basically buy everything you need to to keep it alive with big horsepower using the billet T case, billet bell housing, PPG gearset etc.
Just in the rear end stuff I bought I'm at $9,742.67 LOL and still need DSS rear axles which will be another $1300. I am guessing to build this to handle my power level I will be into this project for about 30K.

Im interested, will prolly just end up face plating the gears and leaving it fwd. Unless a **** ton of parts fall into my lap lol.
Got a text that my Ring and Pinion are in and will be going out next week for cryo treatment and polishing. The LSD is being shipped from Europe so I’m hoping to see it in a few weeks possibly.
Is there a U joint in the setup? I’m assuming there is, that’s usually where off-road guys try to make the weak link so that way they’re not grenadine diffs and axles
Nice work as always. Will be following the progress when I log in from time to time
Thanks man!!

Well I am not really sure yet, there have been guys who went 8's with the CRV rear diff but I'm not sure what they are running. I figure if I have an upgraded ring and pinion plus a good rear LSD that allows the use of 25 spline axles it would hold up. I also have been in touch with Jeff at GearX about their Viscous Coupler and they said they've tested it in 1000whp plus AWD cars, so I may go this route. That would allow me to use a one piece drive shaft I can order from DSS with upgraded 1310 U Joints.

Time to investigate
So I ordered the GearX AWD 25 spline diff so I should be good, as far as clutch packs, I currently have S1 Built locking plates but if I go with the GearX Viscous Coupler I would remove the entire clutch pack and oil pump. The good thing with this would be the use of a one piece driveshaft eliminating the need for an external viscous coupler, carrier bearings and the need to mount all of that.
Well after talking with Jeff at Gearx, I've decided to go with their internal viscous coupler. I also should be receiving the Hub City Performance this coming Thursday so it looks like some of the parts I ordered are making there way over.
As I get some of these parts I will get some pictures or the products and let you guys know how they all work.

Tthat's awesome. Really looking forward to hear your thoughts on the VC and see more pictures of it once you get it and are finally able to use it...I think that will make the CRV diffs way more useable. Having a one piece driveshaft with only 2 u-joints is a big plus.

For sure, I am hoping that everything holds up well when the time comes to put it to the test.
Made some progress, basically getting the HCP mounting bracket on and then getting the rear diff mounted and figuring out how much I need to cut from the trunk area.
Once I am done with that I can start getting the rear arms on and getting things bolted up, from there I have to get the diff bar measured and welded up.
