Default Where are the holes?

On an enclosure box that is ported, where should the hole be? Does it matter? What about size? How about shape?

And general rules to follow?

Thanks

Just go sealed! I think people like ports because they look cool and you can feel the air through them. In reality, most setups suffer from inproper port tuning, also find out if your sub likes a sealed or ported box better.

If the port is installed at the sides next to the speaker diaphram this will promote / increase the dB level, but will also increase the coloration of the sound due to air velocity disturbences...

If the port is to the rear (most accepted method) then the discoloration is not as prevalent.

The shape of the port and the length will dictake the freq cut off or resonance of the system... Longer or shorter ports will change the freq higher or lower. The diameter is dictated by the size of the cabinet and the size of the speaker diaphram...

I do believe that another HT member posted a URL for you to view the small thiel parameters for deciding what method is required...
Please explain it at a 3rd grade level please

Thanks
