what is a good head unit?
Hi guys, I am looking for a head unit for my car. but I dont want to install amps in my car, so I am looking at the ones with pre-amp... so which pre-amp head unit provide the best bang for buck?
Anyone know if the Nakamichi CD-300 is pre-amp, and how many watts per- channel?

Um, correct me if I'm wrong, but those "pre-amps" you are talking about are the rca outputs on the back of the HU that provide a signal for an amp to be hooked into. If you let us know how much you want to spend, if you plan on putting in subs, if you want mp3 or not, etc, then maybe we can help you out some more.
he stated he didnt want to install amps.. so I think what he's asking is what is a head unit which supplies a decent amount of power internally w/o the use/addition of amps.. since he said he doesnt want to install amps he probably had the terms mixed up ... I havent been in the market for a head unit in a while.. so I really dont know whats out anymore..

you are rite on the money, I want a head unit that has enuf power with out having to install amps... thanks thanks...
but the budget.. I dont have much idea yet, can be 300 - 1000, so doesnt matter.. I dont want any mp3s, if I can have CD changer with that price, that will be great.. a single CD doesnt hurt tho...
just in the market looking for options.. best bang for buck.. again
Thanks for the help, guys!!!

Do you care about fancy schmancy display or would you rather go with more performance orientated stuff? The Kenwood Excelon series and the JVC kdsh99 (or 909 I think is what the new model is) are both excellent excellent head units in regards to sound clarity, equalizer options, and power output. Also, Nakamichi's are top rated cd changer wise, so if you want a cd changer, go with Nakamichi. If you want an cool looking HU, go with the Pioneer orangic displays. The best one they have is around 800 bucks but it looks drop dead gorgeous and the sound quality and equalizer options (and power output) are still very good (just not quite as good as the kenwood or jvc's mentioned above). $300- $1000 HU is quite expensive by the way. You can get the JVC kdsh99 or the PIO 7400MP (low end organic display + mp3 -> good deck) for less than $300 bucks shipped. Shop around, http://www.competitionsound.com http://www.ikesound.com http://www.buyloud.com http://www.crutchfield.com and see what you can find. All the specs are listed on all those sites. But don't buy from crutchfield, they are way too expensive.
i'd look into ///Alpine, Eclipse/Fujitsu Ten, Pioneer Premier, Clarion, Nakamichi.. w/ your $1,000 budget you can get a very nice head unit... I have a CDA-7969 ///Alpine unit which I like a lot... I think next time around I'm either going to get another Alpine or get Eclipse... as for model numbers.. sorry bro like I said.. I havent beenin the market for a head unit in a while.. so I dont have any current/up to date info/model numbers.. oh yeah my head unit is a "dead head" kinda comp unit where it has no power itself.. it must be run w/ amps.. so don't look into getting my model #...

I dont mind the fancy looking part.. I dont wanna draw attention with it... just causes more trouble.. as for the PI) 7400mp.. the one I have has the exact same power, so I guess I want something more powerful than that..
sigh, does that mean I need to go with an amp, I'd really hate to...
I know that I can get a nice HU w/1000, but the problem is.. many of those HU requires an AMP... they are all about definition... refine..
I have a Nakamichi CD 300 sitting at my home, I dont know if that will do me any good...

And chusai, 50Wx4 is kinda hard to beat. If you want more power, I would say go spend the money on a $150 2 channel amp (mtx 4202 will give 50 watts RMS, not max... if I am remembering the stats correctly) and hook it up to your 2 front speakers. That will probably do you mroe good anyways for less money.
You have McIntosh amps "lying" around and you weren't going to use them?
Geez, I'll take it off your hands and go hunt around some more for a better rms wattage deck

yes, you are correct.. they are 2x100...
I am not into steros... no reason to put such expensive amps to my EG... to elevate the risk of my car being messed around with
