sounds like a really good product. $700 bucks isn't too bad but, the service per month is probably what will hit you hard in the wallet. i'm going to look into the price per month for the service.

CSI makes it for them, so I'm sure it's good.

Bump!

DEI states you get a year for free. Anyone ever get the monthly fee after that?

You think someone would buy this thing not knowing the monthly fee once the free service is up? I highly doubt that.

You never know. there's some dodgy salesmen out there.

Most would sell it on the angle that there's a monthy service fee.

"but let me check me check with my manager....."
* walks over to some older looking guy..... pretends to talk for about 30 seconds.....comes back...*

"hey you're in luck, my manager says if you take it right now, we can wave the monthly monitoring fee for the first year"

sounds like a deal, I'll take two!!

That may work on some people. Like some people (probably a lot) who go in to a car dealership and pay close if not sticker price for a new car. Not knowing about the mark-up and dealer holdback.

I'm sure Viper has a price on the service after the year. But seriously, only a sucker would fall for that above

The Viper 1020GPS is available from most DEI Dealers ( as well as its Python
and Sidewinder bretheren). With all the thefts we have with our cars.....why would
one not speed the bucks to add this? With the GEOFENCE option you can set
an invisable barrier so if your car leaves it you can be notified. I'll put it this way
all of you who craved a 2 way alarm system....this is the ultimate of motification.
Tie it with an alarm system...the ultimate security system.

That would be nice, but out of my price range. Monthly service fee is not something I would be interested in anyhow.

I don't care what you do. IF a person wants your car bad enough they'll get it. Bottom line.

I still think cut-off switch are one of the best anti-theft mods

Not to play devil's advocate or **** peeps off but here goes.

I'm kinda tired of the" if they want bad enough" speak....most peeps come here
looking for the low buck alternative..ie kill switches..then cry a fuggin river
when their pride and joy is raped and left for dead. Kill switches dont make noise
...alarms do..combine them both and you have a security system. Look with
many house brand and a few well known models in the 200-250 installed
range with basic protection...you're stupid not to have one.

Look I see customers every day who come in to replace gear that was stolen and
just as many others who come in with obvious questionable grear looking for
replacements for the missing parts. I also get the caller from adjusters and
issurance investigaters who want to validate a insured claim ( So they had what
installed and when...) and try to settle it for as little as possible.

I'm off my soapbox now.

not to mention with the alarm, good companies like DEI will cover your insurance deductable up to $2500 if your car is stolen and not recovered. Get that out of a kill switch!

I guess I got a steal of a deal when I bought mine. I paid $150 for the tracking device and $5 a month for service.

I agree that the prices of theses thing need to come way down. They consist of a cellular modem and a GPS device. As most know their is only one GPS system and it is owned by the government. It service is free to the public and whoever else wants to use it. So what you are paying for is the cellular service. Your tracking device needs a cellular link to communicate with. My reasoning for why the cost should be cheap is you only need at most 1 minute to communicate with the device. So you are not using a lot of air time. What would be nice is someone created one that you could pay your own cell phone provider for the service. You still wouldn't get unlimited usage because you would still be paying for the air time. But you would have more control over how it is used.

and soon europe will be throwing up their own GPS style system, but it's suppose to allow even greater accurcy to the public than the US owned system does.

has anyone ever thought of just buying a child gps watch? hide it somewhere inside ur car and if ur car gets stolen pay the 30 fee to get hooked up and locate ur car?

alot more inexpensive then paying 700 + monthly fees...

the problem with that is the time between the theft and activating the signal.

Once the GPS starts relaying the vehicle position, to the tracking center, it continues to do so. So say they hide in it a shipping container, or an under ground parkade ( for example). The tracking center has the co-ordinates, right up to the point where the vehicle was "hidden".

With the watch idea, the delay between getting it activated, and getting the location, allows for the vehicle to be hidden from the satalites, making the chance of recovery a lot less.

i wouldn't have a problem buying this system if it wasn't for the limited amount of times you can track your vehicle. there is one option of 30 uses per year and at the max of 150 uses per year.

Most of the devices log an hours worth of data in memory. So they don't need activated. They only need the information retrieved from them. Also most of these run on the anolog wireless system. So a shipping container or garage will not prevent the data from being retrieved. The weak link is the GPS antenna. It needs a direct view of the sky. It can see thru plastic but not metal. So what you said is some what correct. I am not sure how the child devices work.

Also police can pin point any cellular connection, so if they really wanted to find it they could. It was mandated a long time ago that they have this ability just incase of an emergency. They would be able to track the location of the person. I doubt they would use it to locate a car though. They never really seam to car when a car gets stolen.
