Funny you should mention that. When they were first introduced they were only recommended for automatics. So it became popular for installers to bypass the clutch disable.
You're right though, I think some starters now have features you mentioned that prevent starting/stopping in gear.

Yep, but without ready mode, it's an accident waiting to happen.
Reason I mention it is becasue many piggy-back remote starters are this type.
