Default sub woofer repair help

so i have this 15" jl sub and it seems to be pretty old. everything is in good condition except for the outter rim of it. it has a layered cardboard outter section (where u screw the sub in) and it has started to peel up and i peeled up some of it. does that section really matter? do i need it? underneath it it seems that the foamy ring on the outside of the sub is connected to the metal. could i just get some foam and cut a ring and glue it around the edge? helppp.
