sub with no box
how bad is it to have a sub without a box? something like this:

the reason i ask is cause the setup i am planning at the moment for my new car involves the sub not to have a box, something like the picture above but not at al.. my concerns were about the sounding of the sub without being in a box. will that give it a higher chance to blow or sound worse? any info at all on subs with no boxes is greatly appriciated. thanks

Look again. the sub is in a box. The sub is inverted. The Box is built into the trunk. And the cone is firing into the box. Some speakers do not sound good like this. But as long as its built correctly you should get decient sound. Its more for looks. Plus that Jl sub is not reccommended for free air anyways. Nice set up in the pic. What Kind of car do you have?
i have a boosted prelude and for my everyday an is300, its the is300 that i want to make the trunk for. i dont want anything insane in there cause one i cant afford it lol and second cause i wana use my trunk. ie: put **** in it and not just have it for looks. i dont want to do anything like the pic i posted that was just as an example for the sub. the way i wana do my sub is through the ski pass, but then the cone of the sub isnt going to be in a box and i wanted to know if that was going to be healthy for the sub and for the sound, cause there really isnt gonna be any sort of box, unless the cabin of the car can be considerd a box. the sub i want to use for the application is this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...wItem

There are "freeair" subs, [no box needed, the trunk is the box] as mentioned the JL in the pix is in a box, [spare tire well box] and is mounded that way for show, and to save a little room, [box does not have to be as big] and mounting depth would be an issue.
There may be room under a front seat for the amp, [depending on size of amp] and a single 10" sub can go into less then a 1 cuft box, [depending on sub] so you would not have to give up much space in the trunk.

This would be the perfect way to go. Cheaper and easier then trying to mount a free-air system in your car. Going free-air does not mean cheap. Its alot of work on some cars and yours is one. Why hack up your back deck?
