Starter Kill Switch
I just put in a starter kill switch in my car. I cut the starter line and just put a switch inbetween it.
My friend who installs audio/security systems says this isnt good to do. I should use a relay because I will blow the switch without one.
Anybody know if this is true?

i think its pointless, if someone is gonna steal your car and they dont have a key to it, they're goin for the starter wire anyways...you think they're gonna try to crank it and if it dont start just walk away? thieves are persistant
i'd use a relay to be safe. The switch might not be designed to handle the amps that the starter wire is going to be carrying. Get a nice 40 amp auto relay (DEI 8617) and hook the switch to it
Were you helping me? No
Were your whoring my thread? Yes
Ok guys today I put a relay in and its working good. I also hooked it up to the parking lights so the switch and lights have to be on for it to work.

and see i got yelled at in my high school electronics classes because of my wiring. Looked like crap and you couldn't trace it out, but it always worked. When my teacher made me go back and do it all nice and pretty things would go wrong. I cut out the key cylinder in my friend's RX-7 and made it 2 aviator switchs, one controlling accessory and one controlling ignintion and push button for start.. and one main hidden kill switch. With all the different color wires from the relays and the way everythign is laid out.. you'd be hard pressed to figure out what wire was what and went where. Definantly harder to hotwire lol. And who says spaghetti wiring is a bad thing??
Unless your switch is rated at around 30 amps you will need a relay. What will happen is you will be in the most dangerous section of town and then the switch will fail, forcing you to call mommy and daddy to come pick you up because you are too scared to get out of the car.
Just kidding, but the switch will fail eventually. Most cheapy switches are really designed to cycle (turn on and off) that many times anyway. A relay can cycle many many times.
