Default Replacing OEM 96-98 CD player - can I keep headunit?

My OEM CD player is crapping out. I'd like to get an aftermarket CD player and put it where my OEM one is (behind the cupolders). However, can I keep the OEM headunit so the keyless entry works but still have the aftermarket deck? Is the keyless entry going to work if the OEM radio itself doesn't?

At our store we put the factory headunit behind the bottom center console. So its hidden. We still leave that portion hooked up for the keyless and the new radio goes were the old factory was. You would never knw the factory deck is hidden. Thats the way we do it here. There is other ways but we find this the best way to do it.

I thought about that, but want to hide my aftermarket deck so it looks like I have just the OEM one and I'll keep the cupholder lid up so no one can see the new one.

Back from the dead!

Just bought a new JVC CD player.

I was told I'll have to get two wiring harnesses so that my keyless still works, however, I don't think that's right. He said, as so many others have, that Best Buy ususally just pushes the old head unit back into the dash, and puts the new one in its place. I don't want to push it back into the dash. I just want to keep the old head unit it in the OEM location and put my new deck where the OEM CD player is (by the cupholders).

What will I need to do this? (e.g. other than one normal wiring harness)

use a metra harnass 70-1720t this will allow the factory radio to stay plugged in and keep your keyless and dome light working

then with a little patience and work you can extend the wires down to the pocket above the cupholders, remove the cd player and put your new radio in it's place...
